We love this idea and look forward to seeing it roll out as a way of helping consumers navigate the exciting world of e-bikes.

🚲⚡ New CRPD program helps riders identify and classify their e-bikes

At first glance, not every electric bike is what it appears, and determining if an e-bike meets Colorado’s legal classifications can sometimes be confusing for riders and parents. To help bring clarity and confidence to the community, the Castle Rock Police Department is launching a voluntary E-Bike Classification program that allows owners to have their e-bikes inspected before receiving a classification sticker.

The program was designed to help riders understand the type of e-bike they own and provide a simple visual indicator the bike has been reviewed and classified. Once inspected by a Castle Rock Police officer or other designated e-bike classification partner, qualifying bikes will receive a tamper-resistant sticker identifying their classification. Whether purchasing a new e-bike, buying a used one or simply wanting reassurance the bike complies with the law, the program offers owners added peace of mind.

“Our goal is to help families understand what they have and where they can ride,” said Castle Rock Police Sergeant Amanda Lane. “Many people don't realize some vehicles sold as e-bikes don't meet Colorado's legal classifications. This program gives riders confidence their bike has been properly classified, while also helping educate our community about safe and legal riding in the Town of Castle Rock."

This classification program is not a registration program and does not replace proof of ownership. E-bike owners are encouraged to keep records of their purchases to include serial numbers. Additionally, a classification sticker does not give e-bike riders the ability to bypass local laws or ride recklessly, and riders who break the law or operate modified or illegal vehicles remain subject to enforcement. Riders with stickers will still be contacted if they are observed riding recklessly or where e-bikes are prohibited and remain subject to applicable municipal and State laws.
