A few changes are coming to Jan Smith Park, and we wanted to share a little background with the community.

After consulting with Jan Smith herself, the Park District will be making some necessary changes to the vegetation in the lower basin. The upper berms along the south and west sides of the park will continue to feature beautiful native plantings because we know many in our community appreciate native plants and the beauty they add to our parks.

The lower basin serves as an integral part of the Village’s storm water control measures. During the heavy rainstorms and flooding over the Fourth of July holiday, we found that some of the vegetation from the lower basin was impeding the flow of storm water from the reservoir, not allowing the water to recede. Additionally, roots from the natural plantings had also entered and damaged underground storm sewer infrastructure.

These changes will help the basin function as intended while allowing us to continue supporting native plantings in other areas of the park.

We appreciate everyone who cares about Jan Smith Park and the natural beauty it brings to our community. Thank you for your understanding and continued support! 🌱
