Fire suits are designed to protect skin, not carry cargo. Pockets exist for glove storage between sessions, not personal items. Plain water fails you in August heat because sweat strips sodium faster than you can drink. Between sessions, mix 50/50 water and electrolyte powder, not energy drinks or soda. Larry's rule: if you wait until you feel thirsty, you're already down a session's worth of fluids. Hydration starts the night before. A quart of electrolyte mix in your cooler, sipped between laps, keeps reaction time sharp through the final session when most mistakes happen. The fastest driver in the paddock isn't always the one with the best car.

Hands at nine and three. Not ten and two, not loose at the bottom of the rim. Nine and three lets you go full lock without crossing arms, which matters the instant a tank-slapper hits and you need every degree of correction the wheel will give you.

Our fleet runs round steering wheels, so you can grip at nine-three and hold it through the entire corner. The F4 cars use a rectangular wheel, different grip points, but the principle stays identical: hand position controls how fast you can react when the car steps out. Matt teaches it session one, because smooth hands at the right position let you carry more speed than white-knuckling at ten-two ever will.

Your neck knows after session two. The first fitness surprise at a track day isn't legs, it's neck and forearms. Sustained cornering load adds up fast: three G's through turn six, hold it, release, repeat, thirty laps. Matt's advice for drivers planning their first full day: basic neck strengthening in the weeks before, nothing elaborate. Lie flat, lift your head, hold ten seconds, rest, repeat. The second thing costs nothing: consciously relax your grip on straights. White knuckles burn forearms and add fatigue you don't need. Smooth hands, strong neck, longer sessions.

Street pads squealing at the grocery store means they'll fade by lap three. The NS (no-squeal) compounds that keep your commute quiet are designed to shed heat and reduce dust. Race pads are the opposite: they absorb and hold heat to maintain consistent friction at 800°F. Matt's standing rule: if you're running street pads at a track day, expect fade before the session ends. Proper track pads require bedding, a controlled heating cycle that transfers an even layer of material onto the rotor surface. Skip it and you'll get uneven bite, vibration, and shorter pad life. We walk drivers through the bedding sequence before their first hot lap so the braking system is ready when they need it.
