TEAMMATE SPOTLIGHT:

NAME: Dr. Kathleen Ross

How long have you trained?
I started Jiu Jitsu in 2022. I watched my kids for about 10 months before I jumped on the mats myself. I am a blue belt, currently. I love being a beginner because there’s still so much to learn.

Who are you outside of jiu jitsu?
Outside of jiu jitsu, I’m trained as a pelvic floor physiotherapist and I co-own Buffalo’s best PT and acupuncture clinic. I’ve stepped away from treating patients to focus on my kids. Besides jiu jitsu, my favorite hobbies are crossfit and reading. I wake up at 4:15 everyday to read before training or going to the gym.

What’s your “why” for training?
I taught and practiced yoga for 15 before training jiu jitsu. The practice of yoga felt less authentic in my body and jiu jitsu really called to me. Jiu jitsu requires presence, self-love, commitment and vulnerability like no other movement practice. Sometimes I hate jiu jitsu and want to quit. I often cry in my car after training. Jiu jitsu tunes me into the full spectrum of my emotions and my relationship to myself. Also, the community of like-minded weirdos brings me back day after day. The work we do together on the mat is sacred.

Jiu Jitsu is...
going to humble you every single day.

The hardest part of jiu jitsu:
The hardest part of the journey has been showing up even though I know that I'm going to lose and lose (and lose and lose). It takes courage to step on the mats, even after a handful of years.

To someone like me who is interested in trying jiu jitsu:
I promise that if you keep showing up as often as you can, you will learn. It's really that simple. Keep showing up and growth happens.

Jiu jitsu as a reflection of life:
This is such a loaded question because jiu jitsu mirrors life and reflects back to us all of our thoughts, beliefs, habits and will challenge just about all of them! But I have to say that the real beauty of jiu jitsu is that it is a practice of mindfulness in relation. Sparring with a partner means consenting to incredible amounts of trust, care, and vulnerability. Jiu jitsu simulates the core of human relationships - conflict and repair - in a safe container of space and time .Train jiu jitsu and you get to meditate on the preciousness of life and mortality with the best people, no big deal :)

Really inspiring to see people like Mario Lopez repping jiu jitsu, being vulnerable and doing it right - training hard at a high level, competing at an even higher level, and showing everyone in their 40s, 50s and beyond that it isn’t too late to create the best version of yourselves. An absolute warrior on the mats, and a true student of the game. Thanks so much for training with us!
