I expect the same effort, attendance, hard work, discipline and growth from each student regardless of the color of belt around their waist. Each student is very important to me and I love them all equally, and want the best for each of them. I don't care if they have natural talent or struggle badly. They will all be taught the same, get the same attention and be pushed to become the best version of themselves they can be through the classes.

Here's another fun fact about traditional Karate training that I have observed over the years...

Those who have natural talent for it often aren't the ones who become the best at it. Why? Because Karate rewards hard work over talent since it is about what one can build themselves to become rather than how natural they are at it.

In many traditional dojos across the world, there doesn't exist the name game, favoritism, nor even catering to those who have the most talent. Everyone trains together, grows together and improves alongside of each other. It is never about who is the best, who knows who, nor even who kisses the most ass. It is always about the growth of everyone equally.

A good Sensei expects the same from every single student in their dojo, regardless of the rank that student may hold. They are always watching, interacting, talking to them and pushing them to become their absolute best because, in the end, Karate is for everyone...not just certain people who have talent, money or a particular "name."

Strong first night back after the Labor Day holiday!

Drilled some Kata, worked on Yakusoku Kumite, and put everyone through some good training. The beginners did the Yakusoku Challenge and also did a pretty decent job on the drills.

The Advanced class underwent pressure testing of their Yakusoku Kumite, which enlightened many of them to the fact that just because you can perform it doesn't mean you truly know it. When the pressure is on, like it would be in a real self-defense situation, your Karate has to be ready to go. That means training it until it becomes natural.

Strong training, some eye-opening moments, and a really great night at the dojo! See you all next class!

Great night of training and a solid way to end our week!

Basic class worked Kata and then our Shorinkan Standards. Everyone is improving and moving right along, so great job! Keep putting in the work!

Advanced class drilled Pinan Shodan and Nidan, followed by tactical training on elbows, Shuto and even some White Crane methods.

We topped off the evening with open Kobudo training where each student worked Sai, K**a or Nunchaku...or all three! Always good to see students getting the opportunity to work with different weapons and develop their skills beyond the basics.

Great way to finish off the training week! As a reminder, both dojos are closed Monday for Labor Day so our students, instructors and black belts can get some much-needed R&R time in. Enjoy the holiday weekend and we’ll see everyone when classes resume Tuesday!

Things Everyone Who Studies Any Martial Arts Should Know About Longevity...

Martial arts isn't a path that is only about being able to fight. It is a path about constantly seeking to maintain our health so that we can stay active and continue training for as long as we are physically able to.

That being said, as a practitioner of 48 years now, these are some things I have learned truly help me alongside my daily workouts:

1. Chiropractic Care
I see my Chiropractor pretty much every two weeks. Regular adjustments have always helped me with mobility, function and just generally feeling better physically. They have also helped me deal with some of the arthritis and muscle issues that come along with getting older. There is just something that feels amazing about getting cracked. 😂

2. Acupressure and Acupuncture
Over the years I have gained many skills related to understanding acupressure through the martial arts. The methods I have learned have been useful to me for a variety of things, particularly when dealing with areas that get tight or overworked.

I also get acupuncture when needed, primarily for areas where I have accumulated injuries over the years. If you choose to do this, I strongly recommend finding someone who is properly trained and experienced. This isn't something I would recommend having just anyone do.

3. Massage Therapy
I have been seeing my massage therapist twice a month for a very long time. Massage therapy helps me with maintaining mobility, dealing with tight muscles and reducing the general fatigue that accumulates in my body and joints. One of the biggest benefits for me, however, is stress reduction.

As any small business owner will tell you, stress can be a killer, and keeping it under control is extremely important.

4. Walking
I used to be a runner. I loved running. As I have grown older, my joints no longer enjoy running quite as much as I do. That being said, walking every day is a great way to get the heart rate up, move the joints without the same impact that comes with running, and reduce stress.

Stepping out into the park and walking the trail gives me an opportunity to escape from reality for a little while. Sometimes that's just as important as the physical exercise.

5. Get Your Checkup With Your Physician
Yes, I know...a lot of people hate the thought of going to the doctor...but honestly, getting your regular checkup is important. It gives you an opportunity to understand how you are aging, address things that may need attention, and simply be aware of what is happening with your body. Too many people ignore things until something becomes a much bigger problem. Don't be that person.

I had a discussion with one of my adult students about these topics at the dojo a few weeks ago, and they brought up the costs associated with seeing a Chiropractor and a Massage Therapist.

I completely understood that concern. These things can be salty, honestly...but, to be frank, if you cut out some of the things you don't actually need, you can often find room in your budget for things that are actually important to your health and longevity.

He asked me, "Like what?"

So I had him make a list of the things he was spending money on.
It read fast food, random Amazon purchases and a few other things that, honestly, weren't nearly as important as his personal health should be.

When I saw that he was eating fast food about every day, I mentioned that if he made his lunch instead, not only would he save money and eat healthier, but he would have enough money to afford both Chiropractic care and Massage Therapy twice a month.
I showed him the math. He was shocked at how much money he was wasting every week on fast food.

You will notice that I didn't mention nutrition and that is, honestly, because I am not a nutritionist and I am not qualified to speak on the topic. If nutrition is a concern for you, talk to someone who is qualified to give you good advice on it.

One of the goals that should be highly important to those who walk the martial arts path is to be able to train for as long as God allows us to.

That means we really should take our health, our joints, our mobility and our stress seriously.

I don't want to simply train Karate for the next few years. I want to train Karate for the rest of my life. That's the goal.

Anyway, the conversation I had with my student the other day just made me feel the need to make this post.

In the end, people will do what they will with the knowledge others present them, and none of us has any control over that.

So, as always, these are just my opinions based upon my own experiences over 48 years of training. Take from them what you will.

Solid curriculum review tonight in both classes. Some students earned their next stripe and others learned what they have to improve to gain theirs. Belt exams are this month, two weeks away, so it is time to get busy!

Advanced review was pretty good tonight as well, and everyone has improved on their Yakusoku Kumite drills!

Topped the evening's Keiko with a great Nunchaku Kobudo training session, including both Kata and some very advanced manipulation drills from Franz Kyoshi.

Great way to kick off our September! See you all at the dojo!

FASTER! HARDER! MORE POWER! FOCUS! DO IT AGAIN!

Words to live by—all taught in a good martial arts school where your development is more valuable than money or rank.

Many times, people who join a martial arts school get flustered because their Sensei pushes them over and over again. But, in all honesty, that is exactly what martial arts training should do.

Your Sensei isn't just some guy you pay to have you go through some moves and hand you belts. They aren't there just to play around and collect tuition.

A good Sensei wants you to succeed in your Karate training so you can succeed at everything outside of the dojo throughout your life. That's why they don't accept excuses when you skip class or aren't improving at anytime.

Students often hear their Sensei bellow out commands like the ones above, but they are more than just commands. They are words meant to push you beyond your comfort zone and into uncharted territory.

Because only when you move beyond your limitations can you truly discover what you are capable of.

If you train in a good dojo, you will be trained.

That means you don't just show up, screw around, do a little Kata and some Kumite, and get belts simply because you're paying tuition.

You're going to be pushed to be your best...and in that process, you're going to grow into the absolute best version of who you were meant to be.

FASTER!
Push your boundaries. Become quicker, sharper and smarter. Learn to react instead of hesitate. Learn to move with purpose.
And it isn't just about being faster with your Karate. It's about learning to move faster when life demands it.

HARDER!
Put in more effort. Become stronger. Be willing to work when you don't feel like working. Be ready to give everything you've got when the moment comes.
Just like in life, greatness doesn't come from doing something halfway...or sitting on couch wasting precious time when you should be training.

MORE POWER!
Give everything you've got, every moment you're training.
Power isn't just physical. It's the willpower to keep going when you're tired, frustrated or ready to quit.
That willpower you build in the dojo becomes the same willpower you use to excel in life.

FOCUS!
Focus is exactly what it says.
Learn to eliminate distractions. Concentrate on the task at hand. Be present in what you're doing.
When you develop that ability, you begin to see things differently. You begin to recognize opportunities, overcome obstacles and move toward success with purpose.

DO IT AGAIN!
Or, as we say in authentic Okinawan Karate...MOICHIDO!
Even if you think you've got it right...
Even if you think you're doing great...
There is always room to improve.

Moichido teaches us that we don't stop simply because something is good enough.

We do it again.
We improve.
We refine.
We grow.

And once again, that isn't just a lesson for your Karate. It's a lesson for life. Always be the white belt seeking to learn, improve and become better.

That requires Moichido!

Many people fail to understand during the early stages of their training that their Sensei isn't being mean when they demand the best from them.

They're showing that they care about your development. They're pushing you because they see something in you that you may not yet see in yourself.

It's never about what you pay to be a member of a dojo.
It isn't about how many belts you collect.
It isn't about simply showing up.
It's about the training.

And any Sensei worth their rank is going to push you, especially when you don't want to be pushed, even when you're tired, and even when you don't feel like giving your best.

Why?

Because that's how we learn to become stronger, more powerful, more focused and more capable...both in our Karate and in life.
So the next time you feel like your Sensei is yelling at you...

Listen a little differently.
They're not yelling because they want you to fail.
They're pushing because they believe you can do better.
They want you to discover what you're truly capable of.
Because that is what a Sensei truly does...

They bring out your BEST!

FASTER! HARDER! MORE POWER! FOCUS!
MOICHIDO!
