DC v Kings Review

After a turbulent preseason that presented plenty of unforeseen challenges for the club, the Kings were left with the unenviable task of going to the toughest venue and fixture in the USARL, an away date with the DC Cavalry.

The Cavalry, unbeaten at home since coming into existence, presented a tough challenge for the new look Kings who featured no less than 10 debutants.

The game started predictably with the Cavalry racing to a 14 point lead following some disjointed Kings workout sets, but momentum changed when stand off Isaac Frost trotted over unopposed from 40 yards following a Cavalry mistake. A Fabian Turner breakaway shortly after had the Kings back in it. The second quarter saw the Kings really kick into gear with Scott Christian and Josh Blankenship excellent resulting in a further try from Fabian Turner Going in 14-12 at half time.

The second half started brilliantly with Mike St Claire a constant problem for the Cavalry leading to a try for himself and a superb move involving captain Kyle Granby that saw Turner outstrip USA international Ryan Burroughs to score an early try of the season contender. A Khyeem Finley Try had the Kings in front but missed kicks proved costly as the Cavalry rallied and took a 12 point lead. A powerful Yacouba Traore try brought the Kings back in contention but a borderline decision to rule out what would have been an excellent Joaquin Espinosa try put an end to the Kings hopes.

Despite the loss it was an excellent performance and testimony to club’s ability to bounce back from adversity and continue to develop players and grow the game. Best for the Kings were St Claire, Morano, Turner, Christian and Blankenship.
