In 2018, I made a promise to myself: one day, I would become an IBCLC.
My own breastfeeding journey was cut shortβnot because I wanted it to be, but because I lacked the support I needed. That experience sparked a passion that would change the course of my life.
When I left nannying in 2020, I declined severance pay and instead asked for lactation textbooks to help me pursue this dream.
The road was not easy. I faced rejection, financial barriers, mentorship challenges, personal struggles, and moments when I truly wondered if this dream was meant for me. More than once, doors closed in my face.
But I kept going.
In 2025, I was given a second chance to join the Jamaica Medical Center Hospital IBCLC Internship Program. While balancing overnight postpartum doula work, teaching, family responsibilities, and countless hours of studying, I completed my 500 clinical hours and sat for the exam.
Today, I can proudly say:
β¨ I PASSED THE IBCLC EXAM. β¨
I am deeply grateful to my mentors, colleagues, friends, family, and everyone who encouraged me when I wanted to quit. You helped me get here.
As a Black immigrant woman who started over in a new country, this achievement means more than I can put into words. Today, I join the small percentage of Black IBCLCs in the United States, and I do so with immense gratitude.
If you're chasing a dream and the road feels impossible, keep going. The "no" you hear today may simply be redirecting you toward your "yes."
Never give up on yourself.

I'm excited to share that I'll be presenting at the CAPPA Convening on July 30β31 in Philadelphia (and virtually)!
My session, "Beyond Birth: Reimagining Parent Education for the Modern Family," was inspired by my own experience growing up in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. As a young parent, I was surrounded by a village of support, guidance, and shared wisdom. Years later, working with families, I began noticing how many parents felt prepared for birth but unprepared for everything that came after.
In this session, we'll explore how parent education can evolve to better support today's diverse families through parenting, relationships, work-life transitions, community building, and life beyond birth.
I'd love to see you there!
