Did you know horses can SWIM?!?! 🐴🌊
When a horse swims in deep water, their body is actually mostly beneath the surface — sometimes leaving only their head and neck visible. So while these photos may make it look like they’re struggling, this is actually a completely normal swimming position for a horse.
Horses are naturally buoyant because of their large lungs and the air they hold inside them. When swimming, horses also change their breathing pattern and can briefly hold their breath, which is believed to help maintain buoyancy. Their powerful hind legs then do the work of propelling them through the water.
So yes… that “neck-deep” look is normal! ☺️
Swimming is also an incredible workout for horses because the water creates resistance while reducing the amount of weight their limbs have to carry.
Just another reason these animals are pretty amazing 🫶🏼
