Moments That Matter 🎯

Preference assessments are an important part of ABA because they help us identify the items, activities, or experiences a learner may prefer. By offering choices and observing responses, we can learn more about what motivates each individual learner and use those preferences to support meaningful learning opportunities.

🚨 IF LOVING ABA IS A CRIME WE’RE ALL GUILTY. 🚨😂

Count 1: Guilty.
Count 2: Guilty.
Count 3: GUILTY.
…and we’re not even sorry. 😭💛

From celebrating the little wins to watching learners build new skills, there’s a LOT to love about what we do.

Safe to say the whole Crunchtime crew is going down for this one.🐊

POV: You’re trying to find a potential reinforcer for a new client.

But there’s actually a reason behind all the options! 👀 In ABA, a preference assessment can help us identify items, activities, or experiences that a learner may be motivated to work for.

We don’t want to assume what a learner will find reinforcing. We give them choices, observe their preferences, and use that information to guide our teaching. 🧠

Because sometimes finding the right reinforcer really is a full-time investigation. 🔎

🫧Moments That Matter 🫧

Sometimes, the most meaningful moments in therapy are the ones built around what a child chooses.

Our kiddo requested bubbles, so we turned her preferred activity into an opportunity for connection, communication, and FUN! 💕 While swinging through a room full of bubbles, she was able to enjoy a highly motivating activity while practicing skills in a natural and engaging way.

Following a learner’s interests and honoring their choices can help make therapy more meaningful.

Sometimes in ABA, we strategically create small, playful disagreements to help learners practice important social skills! 🧠💬

These moments can give children opportunities to practice:
-Expressing a different opinion appropriately
-Listening to someone else’s perspective
-Responding to disagreement
-Using flexible thinking
-Staying calm when someone doesn’t agree with them

The goal isn’t to create real conflict, but to create a safe, supportive opportunity to practice skills that can be used in everyday life. 💛

POV: You’re teaching social-emotional skills to kids when you were in elementary school 10 YEARS AGO 😭
The fact that I’m now the adult teaching these skills instead of the kid being taught them is actually crazy 💀

But that’s the cool part of ABA. We get to intentionally teach skills like emotional identification, coping strategies, perspective-taking, flexible thinking, and problem-solving so learners can use them in real-life situations. 🧠

Moments That Matter 🚂

Sometimes learning looks like playing with trains! 🛤️💙

During play, our kiddos are building so many important skills, from fine motor coordination and problem-solving to communication, turn-taking, patience, and imaginative play. Every train pushed, track connected, and little “choo choo” is an opportunity to learn, explore, and grow. 🧠🌟

At Crunchtime, we believe some of the biggest learning moments happen when kids are simply having fun. 💙

Because every little moment can become a moment that matters. 🚂✨

POV: Your client is trying to convince you that “both” is absolutely an option. 😂

Me: “You can pick ONE preferred item.”

But honestly, this is where ABA gets fun! 🧠✨ We can use moments like this to work on flexibility, waiting, tolerating “not right now,” making choices, and functional communication.

Sometimes the biggest lesson isn’t getting the preferred item. It’s learning that we can handle when things don’t go exactly the way we want. 💙

POV: Your client decides it’s time to go for a little run… 🏃💨

In ABA, It’s important to understand why the behavior is happening and teach safe, functional alternatives.

ABA teams can work on skills like:
🧠 Functional communication
🛑 Responding to safety instructions
🚶 Staying with an adult or in designated areas
💬 Requesting a break, attention, or access to something appropriately

The goal isn’t simply “stop running.” It’s understanding the behavior, keeping the learner safe, and teaching skills that help them communicate what they need. 💙

✨ Moments That Matter ✨

Sometimes learning looks like play, creativity, and a little bit of sparkle! 💖 Our learner explored a textured sequin board while creating her own designs, giving her the opportunity to practice important skills in a fun and motivating way.

Through this activity, she was working on:
🧠 Fine motor skills and coordination
👀 Visual attention and discrimination
✋ Exploring different textures and sensory input
🎨 Creativity and independent choice-making
🗣️ Communication and requesting
💪 Following directions and staying engaged with an activity

In ABA, meaningful learning can happen during activities that are enjoyable and motivating for the learner. When we follow their interests, we can create opportunities to build skills while making the learning experience fun! 🌟

Every little moment of exploration is a moment that matters. 💕
