Something to consider when you're doing the dummy form is that you have to make allowances for the fact that the dummy won't move like a human would. For example; when you step backwards in the 2nd section to kick the dummy. You have step backwards to in order to perform the kick properly because the dummy doesn't move.
The goal is to train for the concept and understanding, even if it's a little different than it would be for a human opponent.

One of Sifu Jeff's pet peeves is not having the proper structure and form for techniques. For example; having your fingers curled in and no structure or intent for a Tan-Sau. Proper structure, intent and form is critical for your techniques to work correctly. Don't take shortcuts because your Chi-Sau and actual fighting will be a reflection of how you train.

One of the things Sil-Lim-Tau teaches and reinforces is proper power. Meaning, being able to generate power without being tense.
If you're not putting power into your forms, you're not training yourself to be able to apply power in Chi-Sau and actual fighting.

The purpose of Chi-Sau is "Fan-Da", which means "training for the response." Chi-Sau is not fighting or sparring, it is a drill designed to teach you how to respond in a fight. Chi-Sau builds muscle memory, increases sensitivity, teaches proper hand and foot position, and enhances reflexes.

The only person who can make you better is you. Instructors help you know what to work, but it's up to you to train and improve.

This explains why there are so many differences and misunderstandings about Ving-Tsun.
Ip Ching explains that his father taught the traditional Chinese way - which was too slow for many students.
"These people, the majority also didn't learn everything from Ip Man and started teaching".
"Since they didn't learn everything but lots of people knew there were three forms, wooden dummy and weapons forms. They hadn't learnt it so ask others to teach them or create something themselves to teach".
