HYPERMOBILITY 🫸
If you're a yoga teacher or a practicing yogi who enjoys a lot of movement and challenge in your physical yoga practice, its deeply important to educate yourself on how the Hypermobile Body (bless it 🙏🥰🥹) compensates for a lack of elasticity (yes, even in a person who is super flexible) in potentially many bodily systems.
About 60% of practicing yogis are hypermobile.
🧘🧘🧘🧘🤸🏼♀️🤸🏼♀️🤸🏼♀️🤸🏼♀️🤸🏼♀️🤸🏼♀️
You might actually prefer a more physical, challenging style of yoga BECAUSE you are living somewhere on the hypermobility spectrum. Our joints LOVE to feel pressurized.
Hypermobile bodies constantly crave the good-good tension and pressure that the fascia isn't giving us. We can't get comfortable sitting still. We would rather just keep moving. We put our legs in weird positions. We might even love a weighted blanket. We might have been the kid in class who couldn't stop shifting and wiggling around in our hard seat.
Oh, and there's the pain and stiffness we've been told is in our heads. 🖕
Relate? 😮
Good places to start to educate yourself are:
1) Research how hypermobility can impact the cardiovascular and respiratory systems
2) take a deep dive into whats happening with the fascia, joints & ligaments (related but distinct from fascia) with hypermobilty, and how our muscles brilliantly compensate
3) learn what kinds of movements, rest & recovery support tools, modifications and props we should offer or use to support our own and/or our student's hypermobile bodies.
No, yoga teachers aren't doctors. No need to preach or diagnose your students. But we should teach through both the knowledge of our collective student body along with research and training if we are taking bodies through a sequence of complex movements.
Ask your students questions. Pay attention. Educate yourself. Do you see and hear signs of hypermobiltiy in them? Yes, hear. What kind of pain do they tell you about consistently? Listen. Watch. We aren't offering medical advice, but doing no harm is part of the practice as yoga teachers. We do have a responsiblity to teach our students in a way that offers safety. Its their choice whether they take the offer or not.
If you suspect you're hypermobile, you're probably right. You don't need a diagnosis to start learning.how to take care of your body's specific needs today.
We've shared a link to the great online program we just completed (and loved) in the comments that hits on those 3 areas above. Its not too expensive, and just a few hours of your time.
The yoga we teach at Gentle Dragon Yoga Boutique sits on a foundation of these principals because our founder and teacher is hypermobile. But beyond the embodied experience of practicing and teaching in a hypermobile body for many years - education and training are paramount. Not all bodies are the same.
However, EVERYONE BENEFITS from a yoga class that moves slowly, and focuses on joint support and muscle strength over dumping bodies into deep flexibility for extended periods (great for some folx, not great for hypermobile bods).
Aging bodies, bodies recovering from injury and those who have general body pain that remains a mystery (fibromyalgia, for ex) all benefit from a class intentionally crafted to strengthen and fortify the areas of our bodies that need it the most.
Follow Jules Mitchell Yoga, and browse live and online teacher trainings and educational content on her website. Its good stuff.
We linked her site in the comments ,along with the specific link to the course pictured here.
Stay strong. Do yoga.

Are you controlling your life, or creating it?
🔥💫🔥💫🔥💫🔥
BE STILL. CLOSE YOUR EYES. BREATHE.
With each breath in, pull your awareness deeper into your center, and away from the carousel of survival-based thoughts and impulses that swirl around your mind.
Breath by breath, liberate yourself from the belief that you and your thoughts are one.
Feel yourself sink into the medicinal void of pure awareness.
Burn away what isn't truly you, and allow pure energy...not anxiety, not fear, not adrenaline...to fuel your choices.
You're no longer forcing.
You're flowing. ✨
Stay open, and observe without judgement from the inside out.
Hold power and tension only where needed, and softness in your heart and mind.
Be still.
Close your eyes.
Breathe.
Do yoga.
