Our 2000+ acre farm in south central Nebraska has been 100% continuous no-till for over 14 years and we have been working hard for the last several years to research and incorporate cover crops into our no-till system. We have researched cover crop water usage, cover crop nutrient content, and cover crop effect on following crops and our findings are both exciting and encouraging. Will we see you at the Farm Progress Show this week?

Fall is the most common time to plant a cover crop but as the season changes, the ideal planting time for each plant species is going to shift as well.

These planting time frames will influence how diverse or how simple a fall cover crop mix can be. Below are our recommendations based on the middle of the country, USDA plant hardiness zone 5a for the next 7 weeks.

August 15th - Sept. 15th
This time window is great for all cool season cover crop species. Excellent growth can be achieved by spring annuals like oats, peas, radish and turnips and winter annuals can easily be added as well. A few warm season species like buckwheat, sunflowers, safflower, grazing corn can still work.

Sept. 15th - October 10th
The time for warm seasons has passed and spring annuals can be used but with the understanding that full growth potential may not be realized with an early winter. Excellent time for winter cereals along with peas and vetch. Cold hardy brassicas like rapeseed and camelina can still be used as well.

We're seeing some pretty exciting results from experimental Brachia Grass and Congo grass in the test plots!

In the 4th photo you can see the impressive regrowth on all 3 of these test strips after repeated mowing. Then in the 5th photo you can see the regrowth on the back of the test strip where the grass was grazed, an even better response. Very cool to see how each species reacts to different types of disturbances.

Brachia grass is often described as a "wonder grass". It's known to be a highly productive, palatable, nutrient dense and drought resistant option for grazing. It has an aggressive root system which can help stabilize slopes, prevent erosion and creates awesome regrowth. Because of it's persistent growth, we're observing it closely in our test plots to determine what scenarios it might be appropriate to recommend it for.

Congo grass is in the same plant family as brachia grass but it's growth habit is less aggressive and it is well suited for shaded areas. It is an exceptionally palatable and soft grass that is often preferred by grazing animals.

All 3 test strips were planted on May 26th and these photos were taken on August 26th.

Hairy vetch is often touted as the best cool season legume cover crop.

It is very cold tolerant, grows tons of biomass, fixes a significant amount of nitrogen and suppresses w**ds exceptionally well.

When planted as a mix with rye, this combo is nearly unstoppable in terms of w**d suppression. In addition, this grass and legume combination packs a punch in fertilizer delivery. And not just any fertilizer, it's the right kind of organic nitrogen that crops need to grow efficiently.

We’ve observed hairy vetch to contain anywhere from 150-200 pounds of nitrogen per acre. This nitrogen that exists in the plant slowly releases back into the soil when it starts decomposing. We can expect about half of the total nitrogen in the plant to be available for the cash crop to utilize in that growing season.

Thanks for sharing The Crazy Grazer. Just goes to show that even in extreme conditions, it can still be worth trying to get a living root in the ground with primed expectations and a back-up plan. Any moisture that you do get this next month will be put to good use!
