July 15th. Proverbs chapter 15.

Verse 1 says, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Just one verse into Chapter 15 and we read a truth that raises its ugly head all too often in life... as well as the world of sports. This verse can be a product of both sides of the ball... offense or defense. Let’s quickly discuss.

If we are on the receiving end (defense), think about how you receive what people have to say. A comment... a correction... a statement. If it is gentle in tone or spirit, it is much harder to be offended. It is received with much more grace.

However, when we receive something ‘harsh’... well, game on! It is much easier to get angry... even when they may be correct.

On the other side (offense), so many times we have spoken with the wrong tone. Far from being ‘gentle!’ When that happens, we are inviting wrath to respond. Look out, anger is on its way.

Yet, this proverb is a reminder that when we are gentle in our speech... it is much harder for wrath to bubble up. Anger will stay under the surface. Much more pleasant.

Why poke the beast? Why did we say that? Why were we so harsh? There had to be a better way to speak... a more gentle response (answer). Tough to do sometimes in life.
Especially with family.

Seems like we often hurt the ones we love most. Even harder to do in the middle of competition! What say you?

July 14th. Proverbs chapter 14.

Verse 30 says, “A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”

Those who are living with “a heart at peace” are just different from the world. There is an aura about them that reflects contentment... confidence... compassion. In return, they resonate “life.” One might say ‘they have it all together.’

The opposite of being at peace is “envy.”
Always looking at others with a desire for more.
Envy reflects jealousy... never being satisfied... certainly never putting others above themselves.

Looking back, Proverbs 3:7-8 tells us “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.”

July 13th. Proverbs chapter 13.

Verse 20 says, “Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm.”

Who do you run with? Who are the people you are walking with through life? Are they making you better? Are they lifting (AIRO) you up? Most importantly, are they sharpening your walk with Christ?

July 12th. Proverbs chapter 12.

Verse 4 says, “A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.”

The second most important decision a man will ever make, with the first being the decision about asking Jesus into his heart, is who will be his wife. So important on so many levels. A decision that will either honor God and bring his walk closer to Him... or one that will literally eat away at his bones.

July 11th. Proverbs chapter 11.

Verse 25 says, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

There is a saying that you can’t out-give God. In other words, what we do to refresh people, whether as a group or as individuals, will result in us being blessed. This is not a sign of prosperity gospel...but rather that when we put others first we receive the benefit. What would this look like in your world... in your locker room... in your family?

July 10th. Proverbs chapter 10.

Verse 25 says, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

I was told a long time ago that you can’t out-give God. In other words, what we do to refresh people, whether as a group or as individuals, will result in us being blessed. This is not a sign of prosperity gospel...but rather that when we put others first we receive the benefit. What would this look like in your world... in your locker room... in your family?

July 9th. Proverbs chapter 9.

Verse 10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

This is a repeat of what we read in Chapter 1. There has to be a starting point where wisdom begins to accumulate.
In athletics, we sometimes use the phrase “that’s when it clicked for me.” In other words, a scheme, a technique, a confidence that led to success had a starting point when the player saw a positive result. Proverbs tells us the same is found in the growth of our faith journey.
