The Self is known to every one but not clearly. You always exist. The Be-ing is the Self. ‘I am’ is the name of God. Of all definitions of God,

The Wolves Have Returned - Nahko, Trevor, Xavier, Leah & Joseph [World Lyrics] 07/16/2026

This is a beautiful and powerful song, channelling the message of Consciousness in these increasingly dark and chaotic times... (Lyrics included below)...

But, first, some anthropological context and clarification for this well known, though frequently misunderstood, "Two Wolves" story.
Though it's truth, application, and depiction are spot on, and are consistent with universally shared introspections and insights, quite fascinatingly, it is actually a modern fabrication that evolved through several stages before becoming the popular "Cherokee legend" known today. Its history reveals a trajectory from Christian evangelical sermons to a misattributed Native American parable from the Inuit peoples.
The story is now most commonly attributed to the Cherokee or Lenape tribes in popular culture, but research indicates it is not an authentic ancient Native American legend.
Surprisingly, the earliest traceable version appeared in the 1970's in Christian evangelical circles, specifically cited in Billy Graham's 1978 book, where it was attributed to an "Eskimo fisherman" and featured dogs rather than wolves.
The tale was later adapted into the Cherokee wolf narrative by the early 2000's, serving as a modern creation that borrows both biblical and Native imagery for increased emotional impact of a universally human truth and lesson we all must learn.
This serves as excellent evidence that the nature of God/Consciousness, humanity and nature, are most effectively and best understood from the standpoint of Comparative Religion- seeking the truths and lessons that transcend individuals, cultures, and time. This is the most effective way to get the clearest view, and to distinguish between secular dogmatic attachments and beliefs, and the clear flowing current of Ultimate Reality that courses through the whole of existence, remaining unchanged, regardless of the land, language, beliefs, culture or religion in which it manifests.
The Ultimate is undifferentiated. Ultimate Truth cannot be changed, and so will manifest and abide despite any material physical factors of influence. The words may be different, but upon cross-examination, the lessons and truths retain the same core essence.

1. The Original Version: Dogs, Not Wolves-
The earliest traceable versions of the story did not feature wolves or Native Americans.
-1960s Origins: Variations appeared in the early 60's featuring dogs (one black, one white) fighting inside a person. These were used by Christian ministers to illustrate the biblical concept of the struggle between the flesh and the spirit (Romans 7).
-Billy Graham’s Adaptation (1978): The most direct precursor appeared in Billy Graham's 1978 book, The Holy Spirit: Activating God’s Power in Your Life. Herein, Graham attributed the story to an "Eskimo fisherman" (Inuit) who trained two dogs to fight for betting purposes. The moral remains the same -"The one I feed the most wins."

*The Wolves Have Returned Lyrics-
[Verse 1: Nahko Bear]
I'm cutting the bad fruit off of my tree to
Lighten my load and grow me tall
Just like my dogma, this fire pit mantra
Covered in ashes, now take me home
Shedding my antlers and making up answers
To the mystery of nature, so reach for the sun
Spruce tips and cedars now free up them rivers
The salmon will run, no dam can hold
Uniting the nations, it's gonna take some patience
So unzip your sheepskin, the wolves have returned
(Ah-ooooo)
The wolves have returned
(Ah-ooooo)
[Verse 2: Trevor Hall]
I call to the spirit, brother I hear it
Union of all things, like words on the sky
I read the totems, my ancestors wrote 'em
Now I sit patient, as I wait on the tribe
This runs through all things, like thunder and lightning
Song everlasting, well always I learn
Pull off the old skin, now we are kindred
Open and listen, the wolves have returned
(Ah-ooooo)
The wolves have returned
(Ah-ooooo)

[Verse 3: Xavier Rudd]
So channel the old ones, with each waking new sun
Walk with your totem, conditions unsaid
Walk from the mystery, a love where you feeling
Myrrh for protection, a spear in your hand
In light of our dreaming, never meant to be easy
Sometimes there'll be water, sometimes you'll be dry
Footprints in tandem, in this ancient sandstone
Grandmothers reside, and I'll be by your side
Oh, I will be by your side
Grandmother, I will be your side, oh

[Verse 4: Leah Song]
Part of creation is making a statement
You can't escape it, she's coming for you
If it was up to me, I'd teach that the lonely
This is just part of the courage it takes
Maybe it's the music, it's moving right through us
All of the songs that will outlive me
I'm running the song lines, I'm wrapping my prayer ties Preserving the old way, my wolf has returned
(Ah-ooooo)
My wolf has returned, oh
(Ah-ooooo)
[Bridge: Nahko Bear]
Go on and carry your flag, carry your flag, I got your back
Go on and carry your flag, carry your flag, I got your back

[Outro: All]
Carry your flag, carry your flag
Carry your flag, carry your flag
Carry your flag, carry your flag
Carry your flag, carry your flag
Carry your flag, carry your flag
Carry your flag, carry your flag
Carry your flag, carry your flag
Carry your flag

This is a wonderful assessment.
Jai!

You are not a small thing living in a vast universe. You are the vast universe, experiencing itself through a small aperture.

This is not poetic exaggeration. Hall, drawing on the Hermetic and Theosophical traditions, was describing a structural claim about consciousness itself: the individual soul is not separate from the totality it appears to be contained within. It is a compression of that totality, every age the universe has passed through, every form life has taken, every experience consciousness has ever had, folded down into the singular point of awareness you currently call yourself.

The Hermetic principle of correspondence states this precisely: as above, so below. The macrocosm and the microcosm are not two different scales of the same thing observed from different distances, they are literally the same information, expressed at different resolutions. Study the self deeply enough, and you are not learning about one small being among billions. You are examining the same pattern that organizes galaxies, seasons, and the movement of every living thing that has ever existed.

This is why every contemplative tradition insisted that self-knowledge was the highest form of knowledge available to a human being , not because introspection is comfortable, but because the self, examined with sufficient depth, reveals the same laws that govern everything else. The Delphic maxim gnothi seauton, know thyself, was never meant as a psychological exercise in the modern sense. It was understood as the master key to metaphysical knowledge itself.

Jung arrived at the same conclusion from within depth psychology: the collective unconscious is not a separate reservoir somewhere outside the individual psyche. It runs through every person, connecting the personal to something far larger, , ancient, and shared. To know your own depths is to touch what every human being who has ever lived has touched.

"Carl Jung once wrote:

"We cannot change anything unless we accept it. Condemnation does not liberate, it oppresses. And I am the oppressor of the person I condemn, not his friend and fellow-sufferer."

You have been at war with yourself for so long that you've mistaken the battlefield for your actual personality. There is a voice inside you, constant, vigilant, ruthless, that has catalogued every failure, every shortcoming, every moment you fell short of who you thought you should be. And you have mistaken this voice for conscience. You have called it discipline. You have called it holding yourself accountable. But it has never once, not in all these years, led you to lasting change. It has only led you deeper into shame. And shame, contrary to what we've been taught, is not a catalyst for transformation. It is the cement that keeps the worst parts of you exactly where they are.

Jung understood something terrifying about the human psyche. The parts of ourselves we condemn do not disappear. They do not wither under the heat of our self-hatred. They go underground. They become autonomous. And from the basement of the unconscious, they begin to run our lives in ways we cannot see. The man who shames himself for his anger doesn't become peaceful. He becomes passive-aggressive, or he explodes in ways that shock even him. The woman who condemns her own neediness doesn't become independent. She attracts relationships where her unacknowledged need is exploited, all while she insists she doesn't need anyone. The person who rejects their own laziness doesn't become productive. They burn out, collapse, and then binge-consume distraction in a cycle they cannot name.

This is the oppressor Jung names. Not a dictator outside you, but the internal tyrant who believes that enough criticism, enough punishment, enough rejection of your own humanity will finally make you good. And this tyrant is lying. It has always been lying. Because the things we refuse to accept are precisely the things that gain power over us. What you accept, you can work with. What you accept, you can understand. What you accept, you can eventually integrate or release. But what you condemn? That owns you forever.

You have been running from the parts of yourself you deemed unacceptable for so long that you have never actually met them. You have never sat down across the table from your own laziness and asked, "What are you trying to protect me from?" You have never looked your own jealousy in the eye and asked, "What do you believe I lack?" You have never held your own rage with the tenderness of someone who understands that rage is almost always grief wearing a louder mask. Instead, you have shamed these visitors, bolted the door against them, and called it self-improvement. And you have remained exactly the same, or worse, become more rigid, more anxious, more fragile.

Acceptance is not resignation. This is the misunderstanding that keeps people trapped. To accept your anger is not to say it's good. It is to say it's here, and I will no longer exhaust myself pretending it isn't. And in that exhaustion being lifted, something miraculous happens. The energy you spent suppressing the anger becomes available for understanding it. The clarity you burned on self-criticism becomes fuel for actual change. You cannot heal what you refuse to feel. You cannot transform what you refuse to acknowledge exists. The prison door was never locked. You were just too busy hating the prison to notice.

The most radical act you can perform today is not to finally fix yourself. It is to finally stop being your own oppressor. To look at the parts you've called ugly, lazy, weak, too much, not enough, and say, "You are here. I see you. I will not abandon you again." Not because those parts are perfect. Because they are yours. And any wholeness that excludes them is not wholeness at all. It is just another performance.

The moment you accept the full weight of who you are, without editing, without flinching, you will discover something that all the self-help in the world cannot give you. You will discover that the person you've been trying to become was hiding inside the person you've been trying to escape. And that person, the real one, doesn't need to be fixed. They just needed to be found.

Go deeper."

The exhausting part was never the effort. It was always the waiting for someone else’s approval to confirm the effort mattered.

Most people organize their entire inner life around an invisible audience, the imagined reaction of parents, colleagues, strangers online, a version of society that exists mostly in their own head. Every decision gets run through a silent filter: will this be approved of? This filter feels like caution. It is actually a form of outsourcing your own compass to people who were never qualified to hold it in the first place.

Hall understood the initiatic path as fundamentally a movement away from this dependency. The Mystery Schools did not train candidates to seek the approval of the crowd. They trained candidates to develop an internal authority strong enough that external opinion simply stopped registering as relevant data. Not because the candidate became arrogant or dismissive of others, but because they had located something more stable than approval to orient by.

The Stoics called this the discipline of assent , training the mind to withhold automatic agreement with every external judgment and instead evaluate from an internal standard of what is actually true and good. Epictetus taught that what other people think of you is entirely outside your control, and anything entirely outside your control cannot be allowed to determine your inner state without surrendering your freedom to it voluntarily.

The Sufi tradition described this liberation as the death of the nafs’ dependency on the gaze of others , one of the most difficult attachments to release precisely because it disguises itself as humility or social awareness rather than what it actually is: a subtle theft of your own authority over your life.

The world only misaligns your path when you hand it the compass. Take the compass back.

The mountain does not receive water it never poured out.

This is the exact mechanism, not a metaphor stretched to fit a nice sentiment. What flows through you shapes what flows back to you, and the relationship is not symbolic, it is structural, the same way a river carves the exact path that its own current determined. The figure in this image does not become a landscape by accident. What passes through the center of the body becomes the terrain surrounding it.

The Hermetic principle of correspondence states that inner and outer are never separate categories, only different distances from the same source. What you cultivate internally, patience, resentment, generosity, fear, does not remain contained. It moves outward, organizing the reality that surrounds you, the same way water moving through stone eventually determines the shape of the canyon. You are not simply affected by your environment. You are constantly authoring it, whether or not you notice the authorship.

The Bhagavad Gita frames this as karma in its precise, mechanical sense, not punishment or reward doled out by an external judge, but the direct continuation of energy already set in motion. What you put in moves through you and becomes what moves out of you, and what moves out of you becomes the conditions you eventually receive back. There is no gap in the circuit large enough to escape through.

Jung understood this as the psyche’s tendency to externalize its internal contents, what is repressed does not vanish, it projects; what is cultivated does not stay hidden, it radiates.

You are not separate from what flows through you. You are what it becomes.

“Unconditional love really exists in each of us. It is part of our deep inner being. It is not so much an active emotion as a state of being. It’s not ‘I love you’ for this or that reason, not ‘I love you if you love me.’ It’s love for no reason, love without an object.”
