14 July - Shark Awareness Day

Sharks have roamed our oceans for more than 400 million years, playing an essential role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.

This year, we celebrate the recently described Dudgeon's Walking Shark (Hemiscyllium dudgeonae), one of the remarkable epaulette sharks. Until recently, science recognized nine species of walking sharks. The addition of Hemiscyllium dudgeonae brings that number to ten.

Reaching around one metre in length, these nocturnal sharks use their muscular fins to "walk" across the seafloor and even over exposed reef flats at low tide. As night falls, they forage for crabs, shrimp, worms, and small fish hidden among the coral.

Here in the Coral Triangle, walking sharks are just one of the many extraordinary species that remind us how much there is still to discover beneath the surface.

We’ve returned to Cenderawasih Bay. Diving and snorkelling respectfully alongside the magnificent juvenile whale sharks is a privilege that never loses its wonder.

In a remarkable display of coexistence, the fishermen have embraced these gentle giants, viewing them as symbols of good fortune. Today, divers, snorkellers and marine biologists have the incredible opportunity to swim and study alongside these awe-inspiring creatures, witnessing their graceful movements first-hand and learning more about them along the way.

Anemonefish (Amphiprion spp.) – better known as clownfish.

Probably the most photographed fish in the ocean, yet still one of the most captivating for divers of every level.

Indonesia is home to 13 species of anemonefish, making it one of the best places on Earth to discover their incredible diversity. Living among sea anemones, these tiny reef icons are protected from predators while returning the favour by defending and caring for their hosts.

Slow down on your next dive. You might witness a pair tending their eggs or a fearless little guardian chasing away a fish many times its size.

Whale sharks are even more impressive than we thought. New research shows they spend much more time in the deep, open ocean than anyone realized, using the high seas as a massive natural highway for their migrations. The 10-year study analyzed tracking data from 70 whale sharks across Indonesia's most iconic aggregation sites: Cenderawasih Bay in West Papua, Kaimana near Triton Bay, West Papua, Saleh Bay in Sumbawa and the Gulf of Tomini in Sulawesi.
