Marshall County Hapkido Academy "Master the art of self-defense with the power of hapkido!" About Me

Welcome to Marshall County Hapkido Academy.

My name is Sabumnim (Master) Wes Sutton, and I am a Hapkido Master Instructor and Certified Self-Defense Instructor with over 25 years of experience in martial arts, military combat training, and personal development. My journey began in childhood with Ishinryu Karate and continued through generations of martial tradition in my family. My grandfather was a Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and knife-fighting instructor in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, and my mother passed down some of the skills he taught her. I built on those foundations with high school wrestling, then advanced my training in the Marine Corps, where I learned the LINE combat system of the early 1990s. Following my service, I became a full-time Military Police officer in the Army National Guard, gaining experience in joint locks, takedowns, and arrest techniques. After experiencing combat in Desert Storm, I turned to martial arts to help manage PTSD—and that’s when I discovered Hapkido. With my background, the art came naturally, and it became a vital part of my healing journey. Today, as the founder and head instructor at Marshall County Hapkido Academy, I offer classes to students ages 4 and up. I welcome anyone who is willing to learn, regardless of age, sex, color, creed, or cultural background. My goal is not only to teach effective self-defense but to foster confidence, support mental health, improve physical fitness, and build a strong community of individuals committed to self-improvement. Whether you're just beginning or continuing your martial arts journey, I’m honored to help guide and support you every step of the way.

This was a few weeks ago before our classes filled back up, but this right here is why I get out of bed daily. I love watching these kids grow in martial arts.

Three students showed up for Saturday class, but that doesn't mean you give any less of yourself to those students who showed. Sometimes as a Martial Arts instructor you lose motivation if your classes aren't full. I know this feeling, because I've had to fight it after moving to a less populated area. Back in the day I was used to 20-30 students a class, but have had to get used to 8-12 per class. With that being said I'm back to bringing it 100% per class and am throwing all caution into the winds. Our students deserve to be instructed by instructors who give their all and if we can't do that we don't deserve to be in business. HAPKI... let's train!

Trying to demonstrate a jumping 180 to the midsection at the end of class while my legs were spent for Squeaks, but I haven't even performed this kick in awhile. It kind of felt like my body was trying to move through mud which means I need to do this more often.

A bunch of white belts learning and practicing their shoulder rolls. Putting these mats down has made a big difference...no standing around, no students idle, a lot of activity, and a better safer environment for our throws. Hapki

She's a shorty, but puts in work trying to get those kicks up there. My philosophy is if you can develop powerful high kicks your low leg kicking will be even more powerful and effective. Hapki
