If your son wants to play college baseball, the last few years before he gets there probably shouldn’t look like the first 10.
For a long time, more baseball works.
More games.
More lessons.
More reps.
Better teams.
But eventually, the player has to become more than just skilled at their sport.
He has to become physically prepared for what the next level is going to demand.
That means strength.
Speed.
Movement quality.
Recovery.
Work capacity.
Nutrition.
And the ability to handle a much higher training and competition load.
Skill lessons still matter.
A good pitching coach or hitting coach can absolutely help.
But if a 16 or 17 year old is spending more money every year on lessons, travel ball and showcases compared to what they spend on a real strength and conditioning plan, I think the priorities are backwards.
The goal isn’t to make your son better at training.
It’s to make him better at baseball.
And one of the best things a young athlete can do is surround himself with people who are willing to tell him the honest (sometimes uncomfortable) truth about what he actually needs next not just sell him more of what he already likes doing.
Sometimes that means more skill work.
Sometimes it means getting stronger.
Sometimes it means moving better, recovering better, eating more, or simply doing less eyewash in training.
The important part is knowing which problem is actually worth solving right now.
That’s what long term baseball development should look like.

Two pitchers can both be stuck at 87 mph for completely different reasons.
One might be strong, well developed physically, and already spending plenty of time in the weight room.
The other might move well and have clean pitching mechanics, but still be undersized, under fueled, and lacking the physical capacity to produce more velocity.
Same radar gun.
Different problem.
Different program.
That’s why I don’t like blanket advice like:
“Pitchers need to get stronger.”
“Pitchers need better mechanics.”
“Pitchers need more mobility.”
“Pitchers need weighted balls.”
Maybe.
But which pitcher are we talking about?
Good pitching development starts with figuring out what is actually limiting the athlete in front of you.
Sometimes that means building more strength and power (don’t oversimplify rotational power).
Sometimes it means improving movement options, timing/direction, sequencing, or how force is expressed through the throw.
Sometimes it means changing the constraints in throwing environment.
Sometimes it means doing less volume and frequency.
The point is that 87 mph is not a diagnosis.
And one slow motion pitching video usually isn’t enough to tell you why a pitcher is stuck.
The goal of an assessment is to identify the smallest number of things that are actually holding performance back, then build the training around those priorities.
You also must identify what they do exceptionally well and make sure that your training doesn’t take that away (too much focus on 40yd dash is going to kill velocity over time).
If you’re a high school or college pitcher who has been stuck despite getting stronger, throwing more, changing mechanics, or trying different velocity programs, you may not need more work.
You may need a better explanation for why you’re stuck.

Most pitchers don’t need another mechanical cue.
They need to understand why their body keeps producing the mechanics they’re trying to fix.
With this athlete, we didn’t spend our sessions telling him where his arm needed to be or trying to force him into positions we liked on video.
We changed the setup.
Then we worked on the timing and direction of how he created and transferred force through the throw.
And his pitching mechanics started changing with it.
That distinction matters.
A pitching delivery happens incredibly fast.
If you’re standing on the mound thinking:
stay closed
load the back hip
keep the arm up
block the front leg
rotate harder
…it becomes pretty difficult to actually compete and be on time.
Video is useful.
Mechanics matter.
I use both every day.
But the screenshot isn’t the full story.
The map isn’t the territory.
Sometimes the position you don’t like is simply the result of everything that happened before it.
That’s why my goal isn’t to make every pitcher look the same.
It’s to understand how that athlete moves, change the things that are actually limiting him, and give him a delivery he can execute without consciously controlling every piece of it.
We didn’t coach the screenshot.
We changed what was producing it.
