*Bikes have to be complete, functioning, not cracked or broken, not a kid's bike, etc. There are a few other rules, but most bikes will suffice.

When was the last time you replaced your cleats? Your cleats are one of the most important contact points between you and your bike, but they're often overlooked until a ride feels uncomfortable—or worse, unsafe. Cleats wear out. Road cleats are typically plastic and can wear out fast if you walk a lot in your cycling shoes. Some people should probably replace them annually. I don't really walk in mine. The cleats pictured are at least 3 or 4 seasons old, and looking a the yellow rubber nubs, they look pretty darn good.

MTB cleats tend to last a little longer, as they are metal and typically recessed, but they do typically get used more (clipping in and out more often). Brass cleats, like those from Crank Bros. and Time, are a softer metal and will wear faster than a typical steel SPD cleat.

How can you tell when you should replace them? Worn cleats will have excessive side-to-side movement ("float" feels sloppy). Although it is a slow degradation, you might also notice difficulty clipping in or out. You might have visible wear on the edges or engagement surfaces (look at the toe and the heel of the cleats, and the little pads on road cleats). Unexpected releases from the pedals is also a tell-tale signal that it is time to replace them. So is clicking, creaking, or inconsistent pedal engagement.

If you notice your cleats are worn, don't wait until they fail during a ride. Fresh cleats improve comfort, pedaling efficiency, and confidence every time you clip in.

Also, be sure to check the tightness of your cleat hardware. Loose cleats can cause bad things to happen (like not being able to unclip when you need to).

It’s Tour time, and with the start of the Tour de France tends to come a lot of super cool road bikes in for repair. Lots of steel, carbon, and Ti. Lots of Campy. Personally, I love it. Here at WebCyclery, we are HUGE fans of Shimano pedals. They work amazingly well and last and last and last. We have a hard time selling any other pedals. With that said....I don't know the specifics, but at some point Shimano's patented design entered public domain, and other companies have jumped on it to make slight improvements/changes to the pedals, while still using the same Shimano cleat and roughly the same cleat interface. Wolf Tooth has made some especially cool changes that we like - their pedals have a slightly lower stack height, adjustable Q factor, shed mud even better, and save weight. We are carrying the 2-sided ALT pedal (in the super retro purple ano) and the single sided DEL pedal which we would recommend as a great gravel pedal. The ALT is about 20g lighter than the XTR pedals, and the DEL saves about 100g! And they have a 5 year warranty. Both come in at $219.95. 🔥
