Well here is my recap of 2026 South Dakota Governor's cup tournament. I have never fished the bottom of Lake Oahe before so it was all new water to me. To say the weather was tough is an understatement. 10 straight days of Temps over 100 takes a toll on ya. Practice started out decent with several overs up to 9 lbs then went downhill from there. Several days I only caught 2 or 3 fish. The heat limited me to fishing only half days (12 hrs is half a day😁) instead of 14+ that I normally would. I finally found a consistent bite with quality unders and smaller overs and started to line them out to the point i was only graphing to mark fish instead of catching them. Day 1 I couldn't get them to cooperate and broke one of my rules that has helped keep me consistent. Always make a small move before a big move. In steady I went 20 miles up the lake to strike out and return to starting spot to catch a small limit for 114th place. On day 2 I stayed and a adjusted to the fish i had found with lighter jigs and about 10 ft deeper for 19.2 lbs that moved me up 70 places for a 44th place finish out of 200 boats. After driving 2436 miles, 116 hrs of fishing, more gas that I care to mention, 2 full cans of sunscreen and sun poisoning on my hands all i came away with was this hat😅. I did learn a lot about that part of the Lake and will be back there next year. When you get humbled on a lake you can either lay down or dust yourself off and go back for another round. So far I have never laid down 😁

Well here is my sunrise pic because I didn't catch any fish worth a picture yesterday 😅. Got a big piece of humble pie. The Missouri River system is still my favorite place to fish even if she treated me bad yesterday. We fished hard all day and with only 1 fish at 2 pm we stayed grinding and had 2 fish by 3pm. With a 345 check in time I allowed 10 min for trip in and we boated 5 more between 3 and 3:35 for 14.2 lbs and middle of pack finish instead of bottom. We got to check in with 3 minutes left that was wasted fishing time. Will try to do better with time management today!

Made the trip west this week to Lake Oahe for the South Dakota Governor's Cup tournament. It's been 7 days of above 100 degrees with a shopping cart full of Gatorade being drank. Fishing has been tough but managed to get a mixed bag to bite including my pb pike and first king salmon ever. For anyone back home make sure you stop by Knox Marine today for a chance to go fishing with me! I'm boat 182 due back in at 345 central time. Wish me luck!!

My Granddaughter and I got to fish our first tournament together this weekend. It was the Indian Lake State Park kids fishing derby. The tournament was for the single biggest fish(any species) and biggest pan fish. After getting the thumbs up from Azi we started out bluegill fishing for the first hour and caught a few then we switched to bass fishing(🤣)and it didn't take long before she got ahold of this 25¼ incher that tangled us up around docks, pontoon boats and Lilly pads but still some how got it to the net. Im not sure who was more excited but we were both high fiving and hugging each other 🥰. When the dust settled she landed in 2nd place out of 123 kids!! She got 2nd choice of any prize available and she walked past the bicycle and shiny stuff and picked out a new fishing pole. Couldn't be more proud of this little girl!!! She was fishing in rain for beginning of tournament and sticking it out till the end!!! Special thanks to Staci Blackburn Severt for getting Azi there, holding umbrella, pictures and running to truck to get the net i forgot to get out😅

The 3rd stop of the Lake Erie Walleye Trail is done and Mitch Shipman and Myself ended in 9th place with 35.79 lbs. We had a tough practice with finding mostly small fish. The tournament was postponed to Sunday due to weather on Saturday and that helped us. We were able to locate some better fish Saturday with the help of our teammates by pulling Off Shore Tackle boards and mostly bandits. We decided to cast for the tournament because the bigger fish seemed to be on small area's. A ¾ oz tungsten jig from Craig Lewis at Erie Outfitters with a Berkley Minnow or ⅜ jig and crawler was what our fish bit. Cashing a check on my birthday was a great present! Thank you everyone for bday wishes!

Mitch Shipman and Myself fished the 2nd stop of the LEWT and landed in 11th place with 37.5 lbs. The amount of fish in Lake Erie is incredible! We prefished Thu and Fri and caught fish from Avon to the Islands in 10 to 45 fow. For tournament day we decided to fish an area that our team mate Dustin Clark had found structure trolling 20fow with Off Shore Tackle boards. The program was bandits 85-100 back with black and white baits working best. Mitch had his hands full to control the boat after wind picked up out of north east but we caught somewhere around 30 fish for tournament day. Next tournament is in June. Thanks for following along!

We got the year off to a decent start in the LEWT with a top 10 finish. Mitch Shipman and myself were able to scratch out 32.79 lbs casting ¾ oz hair jigs and ¾ oz jig and plastic in pink and purple combinations. Most of our fish were 20-30 ft down over 32-35 fow. We practiced for 2 days running around the lake and finally settled on northwest of Kelly's Island being where our better fish came. Jason Fischer did a great job running the tournament as always and am looking forward to the next one in April!! I apologize for not posting for a little while as I was getting some personal things straightened out. Hope everyone follows along this year and I will do better at posting fishing info and tournament results.
