As a wife and mother of five children, there have been many years where I put others above myself. Over time, I learned that one of the best things I could teach my children was to put myself first sometimes and be a good example of health and strength.
My daughter brought me to my first Burn Boot Camp a year and a half ago. It was a metabolic conditioning day, and I was so out of shape and overweight that I thought I was going to pass out. Even with modifications, it was incredibly difficult. I’m honestly not sure why I came back, but I knew I needed to make a change so I could be healthier and be around longer for my family.
I’ve always enjoyed strength training, so when I first joined Burn, I loved strength days and avoided conditioning days. Eventually, I knew I needed to push myself. I always had an excuse or injury — my back, knees, hernia, shoulder — but the trainers showed me that I could still come to camp and modify anything I needed for my body. In some ways, I’ve become the “master modifier,” and I’m proud of that. Over the last year, I’ve lost 57 pounds and hopefully gained lots of muscle.
When I first joined Burn, getting up off the ground was a challenge and I couldn’t walk more than a few blocks unassisted. I was also recovering from a hysterectomy and severe anemia. I had many reasons working out was difficult, but I kept going anyway.
Burn has helped me so much, and I’m incredibly proud of my progress. I can now get off the ground with ease, and this past March I walked more than 400 miles in Spain on the Camino de Santiago with my husband, two sons and mother-in-law. My favorite workout days are now the conditioning days — and yes, I still modify!
I’m so grateful to my daughter for inviting me and helping me start this journey. It is NEVER too late. I turned 50 this year, I’m going to be a grandma soon, and I’m so excited to have the energy and strength for this next chapter of my life. I still have goals ahead of me, but I know consistency and hard work can get me there. I’m so grateful for this community that keeps pushing me closer to them.
