Doc with one of many nice Albies from this weekend. Our albacore fishing is off to a fantastic start with big numbers showing (along with Spanish mackerel). Shaping up to be a great fall!

I only have a couple days left in September (same wit Nov) but I have a good number of October days left. My calendar is now live on my website.

There’s a lot of life in the ocean right now as fall is fully teasing us. As we were casting to Spanish and Albies we watched this big chase a Spanish mackerel on the surface.

Nice skipjack tuna from recently. We’ve caught a fair number of good sized one this year. They are excellent raw (and seared) and are considered the best poke tuna in Hawaii. They have a larger blood line that needs to be removed but the meat is a unique almost ruby color. They’re an absolute treat if you’re lucky enough to catch one!

Over the last couple of years the Black Sea bass fishing has really improved with this year being quite good all year. I’ve found them in more places, across greater depths and a better size. I’ve had great catches this year with some excellent catches the last couple weeks.

The east coast has two genetically separate stocks with a boundary around cape lookout. The northern stock is doing very well. The southern stock (FL to Hatteras) - not so much as it would appear they’ve really been impacted by changing ocean conditions and water temps the further south you go. But here in SE NC is fantastic to see the fishery improve.

Pictures or videos just can’t do this amazing creature justice. But this past weekend we were so fortunate to to see an absolutely massive manta ray cruising in just 7ft of water on cape lookout shoals. I see a handful a year (if I’m lucky) but seeing one in such clear, shallow water is a very special thing.

Had a good time throwing popping corks for old drum this week on the Neuse River. Fish are a bit scattered but you can grind out some good bites. I’ve been running a few more old trips this year - only a 30min ride from Beaufort in the contender.

Another sailfish from an offshore trip last week. We had two crash the spread at the same time. The first threw the hook but this guy stayed buttoned up@and came in nice and green for me 😂

Just a reminder to folks - it’s prohibited by law to remove billfish from water unless you are harvesting them. Billfish are “ram ventilators” which means they have to be moving forward to oxygenate. With extremely high oxygen requirements, time out of the water creates a high oxygen debt that can be insurmountable in almost no time. Every minute out of the water makes their mortality sky rocket. Research indicates that fish fought properly and left in the water can have a mortality under 5%. For 1-3mins out - over 40%.

Late August is when the bait really starts flowing out the inlets on the full/new moon tides and when you really start to get good action at breaking fishing. Lately it’s been excellent Spanish mackerel, big bluefish, false albacore, all sorts of jacks, big ladyfish…yet everyone is all worried about flounder 😂
