This hero's spirit is what lives inside of so many of the young men who wear the Maroon and White!
Profile of a Hero
September 4, 2024
Twenty-seven hours before kickoff of his senior season, Manny Williams had finally arrived.
After years of preparation, he'd earned the starting running back job. He was stronger than ever—a 500-pound squat, blazing sub-4.6 speed, and ready for the season he'd dreamed about his entire life.
Then everything changed.
On the way home, Manny and two teammates were rear-ended at full speed. Their vehicle was crushed and thrown into a ditch.
Manny climbed from the wreck, dazed and badly injured. Then he realized one of his teammates, Jackson Firmin, was still trapped inside.
Without hesitation, he turned around.
With a fractured hip, collapsed lung, broken clavicle, and broken jaw, Manny ran back to the mangled vehicle and pulled his teammate to safety.
Hours later, he lay in an ICU bed.
Doctors questioned whether he would ever play football again.
Most people would have accepted that verdict.
Manny didn't.
For the next 86 days, he attacked rehabilitation with the same intensity he attacked every workout. Every painful step. Every therapy session. Every setback became another opportunity to prove what he believed all along:
Your circumstances don't determine your future. Your response does.
Eighty-six days after nearly losing his life, Manny Williams ran out of the tunnel against West Monroe in the state quarterfinals.
Not just dressed.
Starting.
That night, he scored the touchdown that sealed a 21-7 victory and sent Central High School to the semifinals.
Two weeks later, he carried the American flag onto the field before the state championship game.
Central defeated Ruston to win the school's first football state championship since 1966.
Manny's greatest victory wasn't returning from injury.
It was refusing to let tragedy define his identity.
He refused to wear the labels others placed on him. He chose courage over comfort, purpose over pity, and faith over fear.
He was Entitled To Nothing.
He was Willing To Do Anything. ETNWTDA
And in the process, he became the hero of his own story.
That's the Hero's Mindset. www.theheromindset.com
