SLHP Monthly Match

Join us at the Ascension Sheriff's Range Sunday, August 23 for our monthly match.

The first match of the day will be the 50 shot Across the Course Match.

This match will be fired on Electronic targets. Bring a tablet or smartphone to score. If you do not have one, we will make arrangements to borrow one.

Registration will begin at 7:30.
Targets need to be set up by 8:30.
Safety brief will begin at 8:40.
First shot at 9:00.

The Across the Course match is sanctioned by the NRA. Scores will be turned into the NRA.
The course of fire is the National Match Course which consists of 50 shots for record and two sighters at each stage.

Slow Fire Standing 10 shots in 10 minutes 200 yards SR Target
Rapid fire Sitting 10 shots in 60 seconds 200 yards SR Target
Rapid Fire Prone 10 shots in 70 seconds 200 yards SR-42 Target

After the Across the Course match, we will hold the F-Class/prone match. This will start around 12:00, if you are shooting this match only, please arrive at 11:30. The match is shot at 300 yards. You can take up to 5 shots for sighters and there are 15 rounds for record. The record rounds must be fired in a 15-minute period. This match is shot prone and you can use a sling, bipod, or rest for support. Just about any rifle up to .35 caliber is legal, unfortunately the rules do not allow for muzzle brakes. Flash suppressors are fine as are suppressors. Entry fee is only a couple of dollars and you can find out how you and your rifle perform at 300 yards. NRA rules now allow suppressors in the tactical class.

AWARDS: Classification awards will be made if there are a minimum of five competitors within that classification. Classes will be combined upward as required except that the High Master class cannot be combined. If less than 5, the High Master classification will fire for overall place awards only. The number of classification awards is determined by the number of competitors within that classification. Second, third, fourth place, etc., awards will be given based on one award for each five (5) competitors, i.e., second 6-10; third 11 or more.

Ice cream match fired at Palo Alto in June

Fellow Competitors,

This match bulletin will start with an apology for my tardiness in reporting. I did send results back in June, but surely you must be anxiously awaiting my Hemingwayesque prose.

On the serious side, thank you to all our competitors, juniors parents, Karl, Tony, Palo Alto BOD, Lee, Dustin, David, Jay, and others for their help with everything from securing the range to managing targets, and helping make this a successful match.

For those who did not know before the match, you now know it is hot in Louisiana during the month of June. This June was no exception.

The first match on Friday June 19th, was the Garand Springfield Modern Military (GSMM) match. We had 18 competitors shooting Garands, Springfields, and AR-15s.

Dwayne Vidrine was first Garand with a Gold Medal score of 279-2X. Danny MacGregor was second, shooting a 269-3X, good for a silver medal. Kevin Klein's bronze medal score of 260-1X was good for third.

Tony Geeck earned a bronze medal with his Springfield 1903-A3.

Ms. Wyndi's gold score of 294-9X (97-1X Offhand!!) took first in Modern Military. Brady was second with a 289-9X (cleaned both of his prone stages), and Mason was close behind with a 289-7X.

Soon after the completion of the GSMM match, 14 competitors formed 7 teams and competed in a Hearst Double match. The course of fire is each competitor fires10 shots slowfire offhand at 200 yards, 10 shots rapid fire at 300 yards, and 10 shots slowfire at 600 yards.There are no sighting shots in this match and the slowfire stages are pair fired.

Team Big Boys consisting of Davis-Vidrine was first overall. (554-11X)
Team Girl Power with Wyndi and Brady was second (First Juniors) just one point behind the Big Boys.
Team Be***rs, Sam Beane and Tony Geeck was third.

We did serve ice cream, normally ice cream is the best part of the day, but it was a great day on the range.

Everybody arrived ready to shoot on Saturday morning. The first match of the day was the President's Course. After the safety briefing and roll call we were ready to go on time.

The course of fire is each competitor fires10 shots slowfire offhand at 200 yards, 10 shots rapid fire at 300 yards, and 10 shots slowfire at 600 yards and as in the Hearst doubles there are no sighters.

James Davis was first overall with a 284-5X.
Dwayne Vidrine was second with a 283-6X
Sam Matak was third and first junior shooting a 281-2X.

So now for the grand finale, the EIC "Leg" match. The bad weather was bearing down on us, but somehow we avoided it until the awards were completed!!
We had 24 shooters with only 2 distinguished rifleman. Two legs were given, one eight point and one 6 point.

Our first place match winner and recipient of the eight point leg was Mr Brady Dodson from the Texas Junior program.
Second place went to Mr. Dwayne Vidrine.
Third place and winner of the six point leg was our longtime friend Mr. Bruce Pickering.
James Davis was first leather and recipient of a nice knife donated by Mr. Tony Geeck.

We were so close to three legs, we will do it for the state championship in October.

Twenty-four shooters competed on Saturday and nine were junior shooters!! This was the most junior shooters Palo Alto has seen in many years, maybe the most ever.
We also had more spectators for this match than I can remember.

We also presented awards for an aggregate of Saturday's two matches.

Wiley old Dwayne Vidrine used old age and treachery to take first place in the aggregate.
Youngblood Brady Dodson with his youthful enthusiasm was second.
Professor James Davis outsmarted the rest of the field for third place.

And I missed an award for Ms Wyndi Sanchez for firing a cold bore X on Saturday. The first shot out of her rifle was an X. I will give her the medal while we are at Perry. Well done.

Ice cream was served to finish another great day on the range.

It was a pleasure holding this match, and thanks again to everybody that participated and supported this match. We are looking forward to seeing you in October for the Louisiana State Championship.

SLHP held its fifth monthly match of the year on June 28th. It was a great day on the range.

We had one new shooter (Jeff), three junior shooters, and seventeen participants overall.

Mike Burke was the overall winner with a score of 480-11

Jeff wilson was first Master with a score of 477-11X.

Tony Geeck was first in the combined Expert, SS, MK class with a 463-12X

Mason won the Junior class with a 466-6X.

Lee also called an excellent match.

Andrew shot a 194-6X SF prone

SLHP held its third monthly match of the year on April 26th. It was a great day on the range.

We had one new shooter, six junior shooters, and eighteen participants overall.

Mike Burke was the overall winner with a score of 479-13X
Sam Beane was first Master with a score of 475-11X.
Tony Geeck was first in the combined Expert, SS, MK class with a 447-7X
Brody won the Junior class with a 468-6X.

A couple of scores of note:
Brody's 468 was a personal best and only two points from a Master score.
Parker shot a 448 in his second HP match

Since we did not shoot the FClass match last month you should have extra ammo. Plan for around five sighters and 20 shots for record.

Below is the basic course of fire. We will fire as two man teams and use reduced targets for 600 yards.

This is a fun match. It is not sanctioned but we will use CMP commands. We will split it up classes between Vintage and anything else including your FClass rifles.

At EACH distance (300 and 600):

Sighting period
5 minutes, unlimited sighters (both team members may fire)
Record fire – Shooter #1
10 shots for record
Fired one shot per target exposure (timed sequence)
Changeover
~2 minutes to switch shooter/spotter roles
Record fire – Shooter #2
10 shots for record

2) Firing Sequence & Commands (What Actually Happens)

The CMP rulebook lays out a very structured timeline. The exact wording can vary slightly by range officer, but the sequence is consistent.

A. Pre-firing sequence

“Relay, move to the line” (Call to the line)
2 minutes to get set up
“Preparation period begins”
3 minutes to get into position and prep rifles

B. Sighting period

“Your 5-minute sighting period begins now”
Unlimited sighters
Ended with:
“Cease fire, make the line safe”

C. Transition to record fire

1-minute pause after sighters
At ~50 seconds:
“LOAD AND STANDBY”

D. Record fire sequence (key part)

This is the defining feature of the Vintage Sniper match:

Target exposure cycle

Targets:
UP (exposed): ~20 seconds → shooter fires 1 shot
DOWN (pits or scoring): ~20 seconds
Repeats for 10 shots total
