Now THAT’S how you start a season! The Jr. Bears hit the ice for opening weekend and came out 5–2 across the organization! 💪❤️🖤

The energy is high, the season is officially underway, and we’re just getting started! Keep bringing the hustle, the teamwork, and that BEARS PRIDE every time we hit the ice.

A little New England weather isn’t going to stop us!
All SCHL games are ON as scheduled this weekend. Island teams were proactively not scheduled this weekend with ferry services likely not running. Teams should plan to travel and play according to the published schedule.

The only exception would be if an individual rink experiences a power outage or other storm-related issue that prevents the facility from operating. If that occurs, we will communicate any necessary changes as quickly as possible.

Please give yourself extra travel time, use caution on the roads, and keep an eye out for any rink-specific updates.

Another incredible pickup for the Marziale Foundation Hockey Equipment & Fund Drive!

Thanks to the generosity of our community, we collected another great load of hockey equipment, skates, protective gear, jerseys, clothing and more — all ready to be put to good use.

Instead of letting outgrown or unused hockey gear sit in the garage, you can help us get it into the hands of players who can use it. Every donation helps us continue supporting Rhode Island Special Hockey and making the game we love more accessible.

Mite Jamboree games (U8 B & C teams) being this weekend!

🏒 SCHL U8 B & C GAMES BEGIN THIS WEEKEND! 🏒

As our U8 B & C teams get ready to hit the ice, here’s a quick rundown of the SCHL half-ice game format and some important rules for coaches, players, and parents.

🔹 GAMEPLAY
• Half-ice, 4-on-4 using bumpers
• BLUE PUCKS are used for all gameplay
• Each ice block features TWO 22:30-minute games
• Teams switch opponents for the second game
• Games are played with a RUNNING CLOCK
• Player changes occur every 1:30 at the sound of the horn

🔹 PLAYER CHANGES
When the horn sounds, players must leave the puck where it is and exit the playing area quickly. The next group immediately enters and play continues.

If a player needs to double shift, they must skate back to the bench/boards and tag up before returning to play.

🔹 KEEP THE GAME MOVING
There are NO regular stoppages, NO offsides and NO icing.

If the puck leaves the playing area, the official will immediately introduce another puck and call “NEW PUCK!”

After a goal, the puck remains in the net and the scoring team retreats to half ice, allowing the other team to break out.

If a goalie covers the puck, the opposing team must back off and allow the goalie space to move the puck to a teammate.

🔹 CONTACT & PENALTIES
U8 B & C is NO-CHECK hockey. The emphasis is on skating, speed, puck movement and skill development.

Penalties may be called, but no penalty time is served. Infractions result in a penalty shot for the player who was fouled, and the game clock continues to run.

🔹 SCORING
Scores may be kept at the rink using the scoreboard and flip chart, but scores are not officially reported. All U8 B & C games will appear as 0-0 on the SCHL website.

Most importantly, this format is designed to keep our youngest players moving, maximize puck touches, develop skills and create an exciting environment on the ice.

BRUINS ACADEMY Learn to Skate REGISTRATION NOW OPEN!

The Jr Bears will once again be a host site for the Boston Bruins Academy Learn to Play Hockey Program. At a cost of $225 each kid will be provided with a full set of new hockey equipment and 4 ice times (equipment alone is $550)! This is a great and cost-effective way for kids to try hockey for the first time. The program takes place at Driscoll Arena October 18th and 25th, and November 1st and 8th at 8:45 AM. Participants in the Bruins Academy will be invited to join our regular Jr Bears Learn to Skate program for $250 which is a $100 discount from the regular price. Ice times for Learn to Skate will continue weekly on Sundays at 8:45 AM at Driscoll Arena through the middle of March. There are only 50 spots available for the Bruins Academy, which will fill quickly, so sign up as soon as possible.

Important Parity Info!

🏒 SCHL PARITY — WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

With parity games complete, the next step begins.

The SCHL member organizations will now meet as the Competition Committee to review and discuss the results from parity. Team placement and the overall divisional structure will be evaluated, discussed, and ultimately voted upon.

Each SCHL member organization has an equal vote in this process.

The goal of the Competition Committee is straightforward: to constitute divisions that provide the best opportunity for competitive, quality hockey each and every game.

Parity results provide important information, but they are only a snapshot of where teams are at the beginning of the season. The committee also recognizes that teams will continue to improve throughout the year through additional practices, coaching, player development, and time together as a team.

The SCHL and its member organizations take great care in this process. There is no way to ultimately predict exactly how an individual team's season will progress. Teams develop at different rates, rosters evolve, and the competitive landscape can change over the course of a season.

Our responsibility is to use the information available to us today to give every team the best possible opportunity for a competitive season.

All teams should have the final placements and schedules by Wednesday evening. All teams should have the expectation to play this coming weekend but that is not guaranteed. Any game listed as TBD on your schedule is a game that is yet to be scheduled due to ice constraints and the SCHL schedulers will work in the coming weeks to fill in the needed slots.
