🇺🇸 WHERE DID WE GO WRONG?
On September 11, 2001, America was attacked.
We watched buildings fall. We watched first responders run toward danger while everyone else was running away. We watched ordinary Americans become heroes.
And then something happened that seems almost foreign today.
America came together.
We flew the flag proudly.
We shook the hands of police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and service members.
We checked on our neighbors.
We stood a little taller when the National Anthem played.
We didn’t ask who somebody voted for before deciding whether they were worth respecting.
We were Americans first.
Now, 25 years later, look at us.
We fight over politics.
We tear each other apart on social media.
We treat disagreement like hatred.
We spend more time looking for reasons to divide ourselves than reasons to stand together.
Somewhere between September 12, 2001 and today, we forgot what it felt like to be one nation.
Maybe we became too comfortable.
Maybe we allowed politicians, television, algorithms, and social media to convince us that our neighbors were our enemies.
Maybe we simply forgot.
But here’s what I refuse to believe:
I refuse to believe that America we saw after 9/11 is gone.
I believe she’s still here—in the firefighter answering the call, the police officer working the midnight shift, the soldier standing watch, the stranger stopping to help somebody on the side of the road, and the neighbor who shows up when things get bad.
Tomorrow, you’ll hear a lot of people say:
“Never Forget.”
They’re right.
Never forget the 2,977 innocent lives taken.
Never forget the first responders who ran toward those towers.
Never forget the families whose lives changed forever.
But there’s something else worth remembering.
Remember September 12th.
Remember what America looked like when we stopped asking what divided us and remembered what united us.
Maybe the best way to honor September 11th isn’t just remembering the America we lost that day.
Maybe it’s fighting to become the America we found the day after. 🇺🇸
