Have you ever stayed in someone’s home and immediately felt welcome?

In my experience, it is rarely because of anything extravagant. It is the fresh linens, a comfortable room, knowing where everything is, and the thoughtful touches that allow a guest to feel completely at ease without having to ask.

I have always believed that good hosting is about making people feel comfortable, not simply impressed.

Some of the most memorable touches I have experienced were while staying in hotels overseas. Knowing I was from the UK, one hotel placed the Financial Times, The Times, and British biscuits in my room. It was a small gesture, but it told me they had paid attention.

When preparing guest rooms myself, I always tried to remember what guests had mentioned in conversation, their favorite flowers, what they liked to drink, or the small things that made them feel at home.

One guest once remarked that no one sends postcards anymore. From then on, I placed notepaper, postcards, and stamps in each guest room so they could easily write to friends or family during their stay.

Another favorite touch was a decanter of good port or brandy on a side table for a quiet nightcap.

The best hosts listen, remember, and anticipate. Those small acts of consideration are often what guests remember long after the visit has ended.

What is one thoughtful touch you have experienced that made you feel truly welcome?

I’ve met families who spend weeks searching for “the perfect candidate,” only to realize they were never completely clear about what they needed in the first place.

One of the biggest hiring mistakes is not necessarily choosing the wrong person, it’s beginning the search without clearly defined expectations.

Responsibilities, schedule, communication style, household culture, and long-term goals all play an important role in finding the right fit.

I often say of new clients, especially those hiring household staff for the first time: “They don’t know what they don’t know.”

That is not a criticism. It is exactly why an experienced agency should guide and support clients throughout the process, helping them define the role, understand realistic compensation, identify priorities, and avoid costly hiring mistakes.

There is also a common misconception that receiving ten or more résumés means an agency is doing a better job. In my experience, a thoughtful shortlist of three to five carefully screened candidates is far more valuable than a stack of résumés that may not truly fit the household.

A good agency does not simply send candidates. It shares its knowledge, offers honest guidance, and presents the strongest possible matches.

There is a reason some agencies have remained in business for more than 25 years.
The clearer the expectations are from the beginning, the smoother and more successful the hiring process becomes for everyone involved.

Some brands build their reputation through advertising. Others earn it quietly, over generations.

Brunello Cucinelli is a brand I have always admired because it has never seemed interested in chasing trends. Its reputation has been built through exceptional craftsmanship, timeless design, and a standard of quality that speaks for itself.

In today’s world, some people will stretch themselves financially simply to own a Louis Vuitton or Hermès bag because the name and logo are immediately recognizable. Personally, I have always believed that true luxury does not need to announce itself.

Real style is often understated. It is found in the quality of the materials, the workmanship, the fit, and the attention to detail, not in a glaring monogram or oversized label.

Throughout my career in private service, I have learned that true quality is rarely loud. You see it in the things that are made well, maintained properly, and designed to last.

Whether it is clothing, a beautifully managed home, or the people you choose to work with, investing in genuine quality is something you rarely regret.

Trends come and go. Timeless quality remains.
Is there a brand you have trusted for years because of its craftsmanship rather than its logo?

The care of fine china and crystal was one of the most important lessons I learned during my butler training in the UK.

Fine pieces require more than careful handling. They require knowledge, patience, and respect. China should be protected from chips, harsh detergents, sudden temperature changes, and improper stacking. Fine crystal should always be washed carefully by hand, never placed in a dishwasher.

One of my first positions after graduating was as Head Steward aboard a 345-foot private yacht. We had just completed a wonderful dinner party, and another staff member had stepped in to help with the cleanup.

Later, I noticed that several of the Saint-Louis crystal glasses were missing.
When I asked where they were, the staff member casually replied, “We put them in the spare dishwasher.”

I immediately made my way to the pantry, with the owner of the yacht following closely behind me. Just as we entered the room, we heard the unmistakable tinkling sound of breaking glass coming from inside the dishwasher.

I opened the door, and there before us was a dishwasher filled with shattered Saint-Louis crystal. Each glass was valued at approximately $400.

The look on Madame’s face is something I will never forget. She instructed me to dismiss the staff member responsible.

There were many lessons in that moment.
Never assume that everyone understands how to care for valuable possessions. Staff must be properly trained, expectations must be clearly communicated, and household procedures must be followed consistently.

Good intentions are not always enough. In private service, knowledge, accountability, and attention to detail matter.

Fine china and crystal may look effortless on a beautifully set table, but preserving them requires experience and care behind the scenes.

People often ask me what makes a great House Manager.

There are many qualities, but the best House Managers I’ve worked with share a few important traits: they can read the room, remain calm under pressure, adapt quickly, and genuinely enjoy solving problems before they become problems.

Private service is unpredictable. Plans change, vendors run late, schedules shift, and unexpected situations arise. A great House Manager keeps everything moving without allowing the household or family to feel the stress behind the scenes.

They are highly organized, but they also understand that organization alone is not enough. The role requires discretion, emotional intelligence, sound judgment, humility, leadership, and what I call a born-to-serve mentality.

There is an important difference between being born to serve and feeling that you are “just a servant.”

People outside the private service industry sometimes misunderstand the profession. Exceptional service is not about being less than anyone else. It is about taking pride in making life run more smoothly, anticipating needs, protecting privacy, and creating an environment where others feel comfortable, supported, and at ease.

The truth is, we are all in service to someone or something, our clients, our families, our colleagues, our communities, or our purpose.

It is not an easy role, but for the right person, it can be one of the most rewarding careers in private service.

One of my favorite parts of estate management was preparing a home for the family’s return.

There was always a quiet satisfaction in completing that final walkthrough, fresh flowers in place, the lighting adjusted, the kitchen stocked with their favorite items, and everything exactly where it should be.

My favorite homecomings were during the December holidays.

My clients would return from Florida to their Maryland home, where the florist had spent days decorating both inside and out. From the moment they entered the property, the tree-lined driveway drew their eyes toward the illuminated fir trees, while the courtyard sparkled with thousands of lights.

Inside, the fireplaces were crackling, holiday music was playing, and hot toddies were waiting on a silver tray.

Most families never see everything that happens before they arrive, and that is exactly how it should be.

When they walk through the front door and everything simply feels warm, welcoming, and effortless, you know you have done your job well.

Those remain some of the most rewarding moments of my career in private service.

Over the years, I’ve learned that a good vendor is worth holding onto.

The best vendors do more than provide quality work. They communicate clearly, arrive when promised, respond when needed, and make your job easier rather than creating more follow-up.

Whether it’s a contractor, landscaper, florist, electrician, plumber, or maintenance company, having trusted professionals you can genuinely rely on makes an enormous difference in how smoothly a home or estate operates.

As an estate manager, I always believed those relationships deserved to be appreciated. At the end of each year, we hosted a holiday gathering for our vendors and presented them with a small gift. Throughout the year, we also remembered birthdays and occasionally sent a dinner gift certificate to a favorite restaurant, especially when someone had rearranged their schedule or helped us at the last minute.

These were simple gestures, but they meant something.

When an emergency arose, and we needed someone immediately, those same vendors were always willing to answer the call. Strong vendor relationships are not built overnight. They are built through trust, respect, loyalty, and appreciation, and they are well worth the investment.

Follow along for more practical insights and lessons from my years in private service and estate management.

Over the years, I’ve walked into beautifully organized homes where finding one simple item could still take 20 minutes.

That’s usually when I realize the problem isn’t organization, it’s the lack of a reliable system.

A good household inventory system doesn’t need to be complicated. It simply helps everyone know where supplies are kept, what’s running low, and what needs replacing before it becomes an issue.

It’s one of those behind-the-scenes systems that nobody notices, until it isn’t there.

How do you keep track of household essentials in your home or workplace? I’d love to hear what works for you.

My journey with polishing silver began long before my formal butler training.

As a child, my mother would ask me to clean the few silver pieces we had at home. Then, at 16, when I entered the world of five-star hotels as a commis waiter, polishing silver became part of my daily responsibility.

I will admit, I hated it at the time.
Before every meal service, each knife, fork, and spoon had to be inspected and hand-polished before it could be placed on the table. No water spots, fingerprints, tarnish, or, dare I say it, food left behind from the previous service.

There is nothing more disappointing than sitting down for a beautiful meal and immediately noticing dirty or poorly polished flatware.
During my butler training, I came to understand that silver polishing was not simply another task to complete. It required patience, care, and respect for the pieces themselves.

Looking back, it taught me something far more valuable: excellence is often found in the jobs that nobody notices.

Caring for silver is about preserving craftsmanship, respecting the home, and maintaining a standard consistently, not only when someone is watching.
I still believe that small habits reveal a great deal about a professional. When you take pride in the smallest details, people naturally learn to trust you with the larger responsibilities.

What skill seemed insignificant when you first learned it, but has stayed with you throughout your career?
