What does yoga tell us about freedom?

In Sanskrit, “freedom” can be expressed through several words, each with a slightly different meaning-

“Moksha” refers to liberation from the cycles of life, death, and rebirth, our ultimate release from the attachments of the physical world.

“Svatantrya” emphasizes independence and self-reliance, being the ultimate source of power in your life.

And “Mukti” is the word for freedom or liberation from restraints or bo***ge.

Watching things play out in our country can make this holiday complicated for many and it can be hard to remember that our freedoms are intertwined with those of others.

If you choose to celebrate today, we encourage you to honor the complexities of freedom and ask yourself “Am I living my life in a way that supports collective liberation?”
