Eduardo “Beto” Adriana was a weightlifter from the island of Curacao, formerly part of the Netherlands Antilles territory. In this wonderful photo from the 1959 Pan Am Games in Chicago, Adriana showcases his tremendous strength as he bends backwards to complete a press. But Adriana was also well-known for his multi-sport versatility. He competed in the heavyweight division (90+kg) at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, won bronze medals in the super heavyweight (90+kg) division at both the 1955 and 1959 Pan Am Games, and dominated local and regional weightlifting competitions, but he was also highly skilled in shot put and shooting. Adriana won a gold medal in shot put at the 1946 and 1959 Central American and Caribbean Games, placed 5th in shot put at the 1955 Pan Am Games, and competed in shooting at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.
