A common Tai Chi principle is that the eyes help guide the movement—but that doesn’t mean you should exaggerate it.
Think about throwing a ball at a target. You don’t dramatically whip your head toward the target first. You simply look where you intend to throw, and the body naturally follows. Tai Chi works much the same way.
When students overemphasize eye movements, the form can become forced and unnatural. The goal is relaxed intention. Let the eyes look where they need to look, and allow the body to respond naturally.
In this throwback lesson, Grandmaster Gohring explains how to use the eyes correctly to create smoother, more authentic Tai Chi movement.
