THE BLACK SHIRT 🖤

One of the toughest things we do each year as coaches is decide who has earned a 3F Black Shirt.

You cannot buy one. We don't sell them. They have to be earned.

A Black Shirt isn't about rankings, State medals, or who wins the most matches. It represents something bigger: leadership, kindness, commitment, consistency, hard work, coachability, and being willing to make the people around you better.

Do our Black Shirt leaders usually have success on the mat? Absolutely. Most of them do very well. But I believe the winning is a by-product of being bought in to those values and trusting the process.

This tradition goes back to the culture we started building from the begining. We learned early that the best wrestler in the room isn't always the leader the room needs. We wanted good young men and women first. Hard workers. Great teammates. Selfless leaders.

That standard has never changed.

There is no set number of Black Shirts each year, and we don't replace one simply because a senior leaves. Every shirt has to be earned. That makes these decisions incredibly difficult because we have a room full of good kids doing the right things.

Last night was Braiden’s last 3FWC practice before heading to IMG Academy in Florida, so of course we had to get one last picture in the room.

This one is tough. Braiden is truly one the last of the OGs. He has grown up in this room, and somewhere along the way he became much more than one of our wrestlers. He became family.

No matter where he goes or what singlet he puts on, he will always be 3F. We want nothing but the best for him and will be rooting for him every step of the way.

One of my favorite parts of coaching has always been watching these young dudes grow up and become good men. Now we get to watch Braiden take that next step, chase his goals, and see where this journey takes him.

Go do your thing, bud. Make the most of this opportunity and know you’ll always have a home here.

Odin’s service will be held this Saturday as we gather to celebrate his life and honor his memory.

Please continue to keep his family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers as we remember an incredible young man who touched so many lives.

It is with an incredibly heavy heart that we share the passing of Odin Hensley.

Odin suffered cardiac arrest during football practice Monday morning and passed away yesterday.

Odin was a senior at Lake Travis High School and had been a member of the 3F Family for many years. He grew up in our room, and like so many of the young men and women who spend years with us, he became much more than a wrestler. He became family.

We are heartbroken.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hensley family, Odin’s friends, teammates, coaches, classmates, and everyone whose life he touched.

Out of respect for the family, we ask that everyone please give them the space and support they need during this unimaginable time. We will share information regarding services when it becomes available.

Odin will always be part of the 3F Family.

A BIG thank you to Coach Angel Escobedo!

We truly appreciate the time, energy, and commitment he continues to give to our annual clinic, eight years and counting. It is always a blast learning from Coach Escobedo, and we are grateful for the technique, experience, and wisdom he shares with our wrestlers.

Good luck to Coach Escobedo and Indiana University this season. The entire 3F Family will be cheering you on!

It was also great having Jackson Shipley back in the room while he was home for a few days from IU. Once 3F Family, always 3F Family!

We're looking to add 3–5 committed high school girls to the 3FWC Women's Program.

We currently have 12 girls.

You cannot fully explain how tough Fargo is. It’s something you have to experience for yourself.

The work. The sacrifice. The discipline. The courage to step onto the biggest stage in high school wrestling and test yourself against the best in the country.

Most leave with heartbreak. Worn down physically and mentally. But they also leave better because they had the courage to challenge themselves.

These three ladies fought for everything they earned. They battled like the warriors they are. They were in every match, every exchange, every fight, and we couldn’t be more proud. They left absolutely everything on the mat. As coaches, we couldn’t ask for anything more.

I told them to hold their heads high. Very few wrestlers can say they are among the top 12 in the nation at the largest high school wrestling tournament in the world. All three of these young women can.

They work unbelievably hard. We ask a lot of them, because we know what they’re capable of. Moments like this are why we demand so much. Growth doesn’t happen without being tested.

The best part? We get all three of them back next year.

The future is bright.

Before we share the posts and graphics celebrating Texas’ semifinalists and All-Americans, we wanted to recognize the wrestlers who made it to the Blood Round today and fell just short of earning a medal.

That is the brutal reality of this sport. By the time you reach the Blood Round, you are already one of the best wrestlers in the country, but one match determines whether you stand on the podium.

Ranked Texas tries to remain neutral throughout the regular season, but when it is Texas against the rest of the country, we are pulling for our Texas wrestlers as hard as anyone.

We know how much time, effort, sacrifice, and support go into reaching this stage—not only from the wrestlers, but also from their coaches and families. Watching them come so close was incredibly difficult.

Before celebrating those who advanced, we wanted to take a moment to recognize these athletes and give them the praise they deserve. They competed with toughness, represented Texas with pride, and proved that they belong among the best in the nation.

This is always a great one. Our annual clinic with Coach Angel Escobedo is coming up August 1st and 2nd, 2026. This will be our 8th year hosting this clinic, and it continues to be one of the best opportunities we bring into the room.

Getting in front of a Division 1 coach is huge. Coach Escobedo can answer questions, teach technique that is working at the D1 level, and be a great resource for wrestlers looking to grow in the sport.

Angel Escobedo is the Head Coach at Indiana University, an NCAA Division 1 Champion, and a World Team Member.

Do not miss this opportunity. We are limiting this clinic to the first 40 wrestlers who sign up, which allows for more one-on-one time and a better learning environment.
