Our community stood behind us again and voted our school Best in Austin 4th year in a row. Great recognition on our 35th year anniversary teaching in Austin.

I came across an article this week about people who stay mentally sharp into their 80s, and I couldn’t help thinking: this sounds a lot like Tai Chi.

The research it discusses points to a few things that seem to matter over the long term: continuing to learn things that are genuinely difficult, staying socially connected, and remaining engaged rather than retreating into what is already comfortable.

That is one of the things I love about Tai Chi.

It can be gentle on the body, but it never has to become easy for the brain. There is always another layer of balance, coordination, memory, attention, timing, relaxation, or awareness to discover. You can practice for decades and still regularly encounter things you cannot quite do yet.

And you don’t have to do it alone.

A good Tai Chi school becomes a community of people learning together over years—beginners practicing beside people who have been training for decades, students becoming teachers, friendships developing, and everyone continuing to be challenged.

The article makes an important distinction: simply doing familiar activities may not provide the same benefit as continuing to learn something that stretches you. It also points to strong social relationships as a recurring characteristic of people who remain especially cognitively healthy later in life.

Maybe one of the great gifts of Tai Chi is that it gives us both at once:

A practice that continues to challenge us, and a community in which we can keep growing.

That seems like a pretty good way to spend the next few decades

A Shocking New Discovery
Research on people who stay razor-sharp into their 80s found something surprising — it wasn't genetics, and it wasn't even exercise. It was people who kept challenging their brains with genuinely hard new skills, and who stayed embedded in a community of people who showed up for them week after week.

That perfectly describes the kung fu and tai chi jounrey and our amazing community. Learning this takes real focus — it's not a treadmill you can zone out on. And you're doing it in a room with the same faces, every week, for years.

Tai Chi looks simple from the outside.

Move slowly.
Breathe.
Relax.

But underneath that simplicity is an art people can spend a lifetime exploring.

Tai Chi teaches us to move with greater balance, awareness and coordination while learning how to release unnecessary tension.

And when Tai Chi is taught by a neuroscientist who is also an 8th-degree black belt, it becomes more than a series of movements.

It becomes a **curriculum for balancing the nervous system and the body**.

At Austin Kung Fu & Tai Chi, we explore Tai Chi as both an ancient martial art and a practical way to train attention, breathing, posture, balance and nervous-system regulation.

The goal isn't simply to learn a form.

It's to become more comfortable in your own body, more adaptable under stress, and more present in the moment.

We've been teaching martial arts in Austin since 1991, and year after year, Austin readers have voted us among the **Best Martial Arts Schools in Austin** in the Austin American-Statesman Readers' Choice awards.

Kids need more than another activity.

Kung Fu gives them a place to move, learn, focus, struggle a little, succeed, and discover what they’re capable of.

At Austin Kung Fu & Tai Chi, our kids learn traditional martial arts while developing coordination, concentration, discipline and confidence. And just as importantly, they become part of a community of teachers and students who genuinely want to see them succeed.

We have classes for younger Tigers ages 4–6 and Dragons ages 7–12, with a path that can grow with them for years.
