The Carver honors the life of James H. Means Jr. (1945-2026).

Son of Austin community leader, educator and civil rights activist Bertha Sadler Means and James H. Means Sr., mathematics professor at Huston-Tillotson University who became the first African American Democratic precinct chairman in Travis County (1946), and brother to Joan Means Khabele, who fought to desegregate Barton Springs and Zilker Park (1960), James H. Means Jr. led a full life with a myriad of his own groundbreaking achievements. A pioneer who laid the groundwork for future generations of student athletes, James H. Means Jr. was the first African American student athlete and scholarship recipient at The University of Texas at Austin. He was also the first African American to compete in any sport in the Southwest Conference and was inducted in the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor in 2023. We recognize Means for his courage, innovation, and his seemingly predestined triumphs that helped pave new pathways for African American athletes. May he rest in power. 🕊
