At Life Ki-do Martial Arts Austin, we strengthen our students inside and out. Through our Tools for Life social emotional learning system, our students develop focus & mindfulness, confidence, resilience, and social intelligence (empathy, compassion and kindness). This means Life Ki-do students learn to trust their inner natural strength and abilities while also learning to work together respectfully. They go into the world confidently, looking to their inner guide, rather than peers and outside influences, for validation and motivation. Through our unique blend of martial arts, our students also develop a strong, safe body while learning how to breathe, relax and flow on and off the mats.

Passion. Professionalism. Amazing work with kids. πŸ’›πŸ₯‹

Reviews like this one from our South Austin community make our whole team smile β€” and remind us exactly why we opened our new South Austin Dojo. Because families in Circle C, Oak Hill, and South Austin deserve an instructor who shows up with this kind of heart and dedication every single class.

Sensei Deven brings something genuinely special to the mat. His passion for the work is not something he performs β€” it is something students and parents feel from the very first class. And that passion is what drives real growth, real confidence, and real results in every child he teaches.

To this family, thank you for taking the time to share this. It means everything to Sensei Deven and to our entire Life Ki-do team. πŸ™

If you have a child in South Austin, Circle C, or Oak Hill who is ready to experience this kind of instruction firsthand, a free trial class is always available.

One word determines how safe any physical environment is. Awareness. πŸ’‘

Sensei Jonathan makes this point clearly in this clip β€” and it is the thread that runs through the entire full video and blog from Thursday on martial arts safety. The awareness of the person training. The awareness of their partner. The awareness of the instructor. And the kind of culture being nurtured in the space where all of it happens.

When those four things are present and healthy, the risk of injury drops dramatically regardless of what martial art is being practiced. When they are not, any activity β€” even something as gentle as Tai Chi β€” can result in getting hurt.

If you missed Thursday's full video and blog on whether martial arts is safe for kids and adults, this weekend is the perfect time to go back and watch. It is one of the most honest and practical conversations Sensei Jonathan has ever put on camera for any parent or adult considering martial arts.

Your breath is always with you. And it is more powerful than most people realize. πŸ’›

This quote from the Meditation Flow book by Sensei Jonathan Hewitt captures something we come back to again and again at Life Ki-do β€” that breathing is not just something the body does automatically. It is a bridge. A living connection between what is happening in your body and what is happening in your mind. And because of that connection, it is one of the most accessible and powerful tools any of us have for changing how we feel in any given moment.

Stressed? Your breath can soften it. Unfocused? Your breath can sharpen it. Disconnected from yourself? Your breath can bring you back.

That is not a wellness trend. That is physiology. And it is something Sensei Jonathan has been teaching at Life Ki-do for over 30 years β€” to children, teenagers, and adults across Austin and Westlake Hills β€” through the Body, Breath, and Brain framework that runs through every single class.

Meditation Flow takes that teaching deeper β€” a practical, accessible guide to using breathing and meditation as tools for self-regulation and genuine peace in daily life. Whether you are brand new to meditation or have been practicing for years, this book meets you where you are.

**Deflect Downward β†’ Parry β†’ Punch β†’ Closing the Form ☯️**

From Fan Through the Back, we turn our attention to the other direction, shift back, and move into **Deflect Downward**.

From there:
β€’ Parry and monitor
β€’ Step forward
β€’ Shift and punch
β€’ Release
β€’ Return through center
β€’ Settle and close the form

As always, try to feel the movement traveling through the whole body rather than just performing the individual techniques.

Is Tai Chi good for older adults or complete beginners? Sensei Jonathan's answer is simple β€” absolutely yes. No question. πŸ’›

Tai Chi is one of those rare practices that truly meets you wherever you are. It does not matter if you are 19 or 99, in great shape or just getting started, a seasoned martial artist or someone who has never trained a day in your life. Tai Chi is designed as a moving mindfulness meditation practice β€” and its benefits are available to everyone who shows up for it.

Balance. Calmness. Stress relief. Focus. Strength. Community. These are the things people come to Tai Chi looking for β€” and these are exactly what a well-taught class delivers week after week.

At Life Ki-do in Westlake our Tai Chi classes are built around the same nurturing and empowering culture that runs through every program we offer. A space where you can show up exactly as you are, move at a pace that is right for you, and be part of a community of people who are all on the same journey toward feeling better in their body and their mind.

Whether you are looking for a gentle complement to your existing training, a way to de-stress and find more calm in your daily life, or simply a welcoming community to move with β€” Tai Chi at Life Ki-do is worth trying.

Fan Through the Back

From Pierce the Sea Bottom, we rise, connect the left hand to the right pulse point, step with the left leg, and allow the two sides of the body to work together as we move into Fan Through the Back.

As with every Tai Chi movement, focus less on simply copying the shape and more on feeling the coordination, balance, and flow through the whole body.

The safety of a martial arts class has very little to do with the style being taught. It has everything to do with the culture of the place. πŸ’‘

Sensei Jonathan gets personal in this clip β€” and in today's full video and blog β€” about his own experience training in martial arts from a place of fear, competition, and the need to prove himself. And what he learned the hard way: when that is the energy in the room, getting hurt becomes significantly more likely. For yourself and for the people around you.

The alternative is what we work every day to build at Life Ki-do in Westlake and South Austin. A nurturing and empowering environment where students collaborate instead of compete, check in with each other about the right level of challenge, and communicate in a way that supports everyone in the room.

That is what makes martial arts genuinely safe. Not the art itself β€” the culture around it.

Today's full video and blog are both live now and this is one of the most honest and practical conversations Jonathan has put on camera for any parent or adult considering martial arts.

Learn **Pierce the Sea Bottom**, the next movement in our step-by-step Tai Chi form series.

Beginning from Fair Lady Works the Shuttle, we use intention to bring the back foot in, shift into a cat stance, raise the right hand, and rotate through the dantian as we flow into Pierce the Sea Bottom.

Rather than simply memorizing movements, focus on moving with awareness, relaxation, balance, and intention.

A year of training. A 10-year-old who has grown in ways that go far beyond the mat. And an instructor who made it all possible. πŸ’›

This review from a South Austin family captures everything we love about what Sensei Deven brings to our new South Austin Dojo. The karate technique and physical skills are real and meaningful β€” but what this family highlighted alongside them tells the full story. Breathing. Focus. Confidence. Life lessons. Encouragement. Guidance.

That is not a martial arts class. That is a whole-child environment that shapes who a young person is becoming β€” week after week, year after year.

Sensei Deven has an extraordinary ability to meet each student where they are and draw out the very best in them. For this family's 10-year-old that has meant a year of genuine, visible growth that they are clearly deeply grateful for. And so are we.

To this wonderful family β€” thank you for sharing this and for trusting Sensei Deven and Life Ki-do South Austin with your son. It means everything to our team. πŸ™

If you have a child in Circle C, Oak Hill, or South Austin who is ready for this kind of environment, we would love to welcome them for a free trial class.

**Fair Lady Works the Shuttle** is the next movement in the Yang 24 Tai Chi form.

As we transition from Rooster Stands on One Leg, notice the feeling of gathering and coiling before moving outward.

One side of the body blends as the other side pushes or strikes. Then we yield, shift, and repeat to the opposite side.

Rather than simply memorizing the movements, practice feeling the principles within them: **prepare, blend, yield, and flow.**
