Yale study finds nearly half of older adults improved with age 06/30/2026

Today's Senior Call touched on something that stayed with me.

We talked about older adults who seem to have stopped looking forward to what's next. They've withdrawn from activities they once enjoyed, become isolated, or simply accepted that decline is inevitable because they're "just getting older."

Then I came across this Yale study.

It reminds us that aging isn't a one-way street. Nearly half of the adults studied actually improved physically, mentally, or both over time. One of the strongest predictors? Having a more positive outlook on aging.

Of course, a positive attitude alone won't cure disease or erase life's challenges. But our expectations matter. Staying engaged matters. Having purpose matters. Believing there's still room to grow matters.

As a Senior Home Coach, I've seen people rediscover hobbies, build new friendships, regain confidence after a move, and find joy in this next chapter of life.

Growing older isn't about pretending life is easy. It's about remembering that there is still life to be lived.

What are your thoughts? Have you seen someone flourish later in life when they found a renewed sense of purpose?

Yale study finds nearly half of older adults improved with age A long-term Yale study is challenging one of the biggest myths about aging. Nearly half of adults over 65 improved physically, mentally, or both over time, despite the common belief that aging means constant decline. Researchers found that people with more positive attitudes about getting older were...

Many of us have watched parents, friends, neighbors, or spouses experience changes as they age. Sometimes it's hard to know what's a normal part of aging—and what may be a warning sign that deserves attention.

That's why I'm looking forward to this upcoming ACAP Decatur-DeKalb program:

Healthy Aging and Warning Signs Every Family Should Know

📅 July 9
Oak Grove Methodist Church

Whether you're planning for your own future, supporting an aging loved one, or simply want to be better informed, this promises to be an important conversation.

Knowledge doesn't prevent every challenge, but it can help us recognize concerns sooner and make better decisions along the way.

I hope you'll consider joining us.

A wonderful morning with DSPN at Fountainview Center.

We enjoyed breakfast, toured the community, and learned more about the specialized care and support available to individuals living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

As a Senior Home Coach™, I value opportunities like this to better understand the resources available to older adults and families as their needs change.

Thank you to Heather Bogle and the Fountainview team for your warm hospitality and for the important work you do every day.

A critical safety net for older adults expired in 2024. Most Americans don't know it and millions rely on the services it supports every day.

Meals. Transportation. Caregiver support. Fall prevention. Protection from elder abuse. Aging in place resources.

The OAA officially expired in 2024 and is currently operating under temporary funding measures while lawmakers work toward reauthorization.

As America’s population ages, this conversation matters more than ever.

Aging is not a partisan issue. It touches every family.

Future planning isn’t pessimistic, it’s empowering.

Whether it’s organizing documents, reviewing medications, or talking through wishes with loved ones, small planning steps today can reduce stress for everyone later.

Strong living isn’t just physical. It’s emotional, financial, and practical too.

Tiny preparations now can create enormous peace of mind later.
