I was intentional that the title of Anchored, Aligned, Accountable messaged that this self-leadership framework applies at home and at work. I was asked how the framework might support parents who are navigating this age of AI with their children. My starting point, parents will be most impactful if they can: (1) share and model their own values with their kids, (2) stay in curiosity, (3) wholeheartedly apologize to their kids when they get it wrong. This sets the foundation of modeling learning, curiosity, and accountability over directing and telling. This approach reflects a desire to prioritize listening and connecting with our children over blaming and shaming them. Which version will our children seek out when they need support or guidance?

It is rare to coach at the most senior levels... and with an audience. (Thank you Brené Brown for being open and trusting to have a completely unscripted session with me...in public.)

I want to highlight that an executive coach should of course, have skill and training on technique- but they must also:

(1) Learn how to Be over how to Do. Brené's Dare to Lead and Daring Way work advanced my ability to Be.
(2) Always recognize the fragility and gift of the coaching alliance. We must learn to be a sacred container for others. It may sound woo-woo, but there is so much privilege in being a container for someone's vulnerability and self-exploration.

Earlier this year, I sat down with Aiko Bethea at the BetterUp Uplift conference in San Francisco to talk about her new book, “Anchored, Aligned, Accountable.” During our conversation, I shared a real leadership conflict that was crushing my spirit and my energy. Aiko, who is one of the most respected senior leadership coaches in the country, gave me and the audience a masterclass in coaching. You could have heard a pin drop.

Aiko’s “Anchored, Aligned, and Accountable” framework focuses on why self-leadership is so critical in today’s complex operating environment. I’ve learned so much from her about how we can assume positive intent and hold ourselves and others accountable.
