The Athens to Atlanta Road Skate, established in 1982 and holding its final event in 2024, was the world's longest running point-to-point skating event. The original 1982 event began as a bar crawl, and grew to be one of the most renowned events in outdoor skating, bringing people from all over the world to attempt the very hilly, very challenging, 38 mile, 49 mile, or the ultimate 87 mile course
from Athens, GA to Atlanta, GA. By 1986, the event had become a competition (see results from all years: https://a2a.net/results/). As inline skates came onto the market in the late 80's and early 90's, and outdoor skating began to grow in the USA, so did Athens to Atlanta. The late 90's and early 00's brought as many as 800 skaters to participate in this 87-mile outdoor skating challenge, even receiving television special coverage by OLN (Outdoor Life Network, later becoming NBC Sports). Popularity for inline skating dwindled into the 2010's, and A2A's numbers dipped to 70-90 participants annually. But still, teams such as Junk Skates and Twincam continued to bring world-class skaters to compete each year. A2A also maintained its strong cult following, with skaters coming year-after-year to skate the historic event (and expand their finisher's coffee mug collection). Following years of financial struggles, dwindling participation numbers, and the exponentially rapid expansion of Atlanta's suburbs (read: traffic), the event was almost canceled in 2024. Instead, a last-ditch-effort crowfunding campaign was launched with the hopes of holding one final event. Over $14K was raised in two weeks, and we were grateful to be able to hold the final Athens to Atlanta Road Skate on October, 20 2024. Although extremely bittersweet, it was the perfect finish to 42 years of this epic event.
