I help you realize career transformation by creating paths toward limitless possibilities🇺🇸🇧🇷🇪🇸

Mark Solms says: “We are conscious not primarily because we think, but because we feel”.

For coaching, instead of asking “What do you want?” I usually ask what is behind the desire for change.

For example, behind someone’s desire to become a C-level leader, there is:
- status
- belonging
- security
- recognition

And behind “I want to quit everything and become an entrepreneur” might have:
- exhaustion
- loss of agency
- novelty seeking
- desire for creative expression

The career goal and the underlying need are not always the same thing.

That distinction is gold in career coaching.

Nine years ago, on August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse crossed Atlanta, where I was living. My meetings moved to Skype (I found a fun snapshot of my chat with 2 former colleagues that day). My husband stood outside with paper glasses, wondering what would happen if an eclipse lasted forever (the movie came after and it’s streaming now - it’s called O Apanhador de Almas, or Soul’s Catcher).

Four days earlier, on August 17, I had written a vision for my life (the one I always mention). I didn’t plan it around the eclipse - I didn’t even know one was coming!

Something had already started moving in me and I just hadn’t seen it yet.

That’s usually how change works: We think insight arrives the moment things go dark - a crisis, a hard piece of feedback - but the shadow that reaches you has usually been moving for a long time before you notice it.

Today’s eclipse crosses the Arctic, Greenland and Iceland hours before it touches Spain. Yes! I’m lucky enough to repeat the experience 😎.

Today, most of Spain doesn’t have to travel to see this eclipse. It’s happening close to home, and people are stopping their afternoon for it.

The full path takes over four hours. The darkness itself lasts about two minutes. By the time you see it, it’s been in motion far longer than that.

Psychologists call this the “unknown” quadrant in Johari’s Window — not hidden, not denied, just not visible yet, to us or to anyone else.

That’s usually where the real movement happens, in the part that hasn’t crossed into view for anyone, including ourselves.

Based on my past eclipse experience, the work I do with people crossing change, and the unknown quadrant of Johari, I ask:

What’s already moving in you that you haven’t named yet?

How does it look like when the light comes back?

Possibility expands when you stop asking “will this work?” and start asking “why not?”

Designing Your Life calls it prototyping: you don’t need certainty to explore an idea, just curiosity.

So here’s your prompt: write down your most “unrealistic” goal. Then list three reasons it might actually be possible.

So this and see what opens up when you stop editing your dreams and ambitions before telling them out loud.

Two cities. 120 leaders. Three days of real talk about Decision Making.

This week was actually a masterclass in generosity. We sat with the difficult, the complex, the lonely decisions and asked: how do we make decision making less draining and more structured?

What this group brought was vulnerability and honesty. What we built together was clarity. 🤩

Having the senior leadership in the room was a privilege and a sign that people matter in this organization.

I’m deeply grateful for your feedback, your openness, and your commitment to leading differently. You’re the best!

July is coming. More of this work ahead.

Thank you. 🙏

Habit is comfortable. Authenticity is brave.

Most of us conform not because we chose to, but because we forgot we had a choice.

My question for you: Where are you playing a role that was never written for you?

Name it. That’s the first step.

👇 Save this for when you need the push.

What’s the effect of having a mom who lives a fulfilling life?

What kind of adults are raised by mothers who live fulfilling lives?

That’s the study I’d love to conduct. And the question behind my Mother’s Day piece this year.

In it, I celebrate the mothers I work with, travel alongside, and call mine — single moms, executives, entrepreneurs, artists, women doing it all in different cities, different countries, different circumstances.

And I share why, after 30 years, this is still the role I perform best.

To every mother reading this: you have my respect, my admiration, and my heart.

What do a COO, an aerospace engineer, and a Big Tech VP have in common?

They all booked a call with me last month, from three different time zones.

My clients are not obvious. You will find them in 22+ countries, each one quietly rethinking what success really means to them.

Different cities. Same code:
→ ambition AND alignment
→ performance AND purpose
→ global exposure AND personal authorship

They have stopped asking "what is the next promotion?" and started asking "what is the next chapter?"

McKinsey research found that 70% of professionals say their sense of purpose comes from their work.

But most career advice still focuses on climbing the ladder — not on building a portfolio of meaning.

That is the space where I work.

If you saw yourself in this post, you are probably already in transition. You just have not named it yet.

2016 me had no idea where we’d be in 2026: different country, different career, different life.

And that’s the thing: you never know the final chapter. You’re not supposed to.

But it’s nice to look back and see how far you’ve come. Every bold move, every uncomfortable pivot, every “what if …”

Today we start a new month. A new quarter. A fresh page.

Your turn: what’s the one step you’re taking towards your future you?

My work lives at the intersection of human potential and the future of work.

I help professionals and entrepreneurs navigate change with clarity and purpose, designing careers and lives that fit who they are becoming.

And for the past two years, I’ve been deep in a question that won’t let me go: what does the future of work actually look like for humans — and how do organizations and people prepare for it?

Through EAGER Consulting, I help teams and companies orchestrate change, build culture playbooks, and design what comes next — with AI in the room, not as a threat, but as part of the strategy.

I’m Fernanda Ortega, Executive Coach (Columbia University) | Designing Your Life (Stanford) | Psychologist
