Empowering change, one leader at a time. - Patrice Williams-Lindo, Career Nomad

California just built the nation’s first AI job-loss tracker.

Oracle cut 21,000 people the same week.

Goldman Sachs says the disruption is “temporary.”

Meanwhile, nobody is building a tracker for the people who kept their jobs but lost their leverage.

That’s the quieter crisis.

AI isn’t replacing you. It’s repricing you — and most people won’t notice until the offer comes in lower than it should.

If you’re still employed and still afraid, that’s not paranoia. That’s signal.

“Sorry to bother you.”
“Just checking in.”
“I could be wrong, but…”

That language isn’t politeness. It’s a positioning leak — and it’s costing women and professionals of color real career advancement.

I was featured in on exactly this.

But let’s go deeper.

Given the current political situation in L.A. — Karen Bass is managing a city in flames and still being asked to prove she belongs in the room.

Had she not been who she IS… and her opponent who he is… would we be questioning her leadership right now — or throwing her a parade for surviving it?

Some people fail up.
Others are just expected to not fail at all.

I was 28 weeks pregnant when Alexia arrived.
That is not the beginning of a triumphant story. That is the beginning of the longest night of my life.
What I remember most is not the machines. It is the other parents. You get to know people in a NICU. You don’t mean to. You’re all just there — waiting, watching, praying in the particular way people pray when they have no other moves left.
I held my breath for her babies because I was too frightened to hold it for my own.
The full piece — including what that night taught me about every room I’ve entered since — is on Substack. Link in the first comment.

My mom brought home a piece of paper.
I was 18. Fresh out of high school. Hated my first year of college. Wasn’t sure what I was doing or where I was going.

She had been in nursing for years. She saw a job opening at the hospital — unit secretary — and thought I could do it. So she brought home a list of medical vocabulary and told me to study it.

I studied it. I passed the interview. I got the job.
And I never stopped doing that exact move.
👉🏽From unit secretary — I learned cardiac telemetry. Became an EKG tech.
👉🏽From EKG tech — I learned perfusion. Became a perfusion technician at Baxter Healthcare.
👉🏽From clinical work — I learned how people learn. Became a trainer, then an instructional designer.
👉🏽From instructional design — I talked my way into consulting. Before “transferable skills” was even a phrase.
Twenty years later: Deloitte. KPMG. Accenture — twice.

Every room I was never supposed to be in. Entered.
Mastered.
Leveraged into the next one.
That move has a name.
I call it The Vocabulary Play.

And I’ve spent 20 years watching other brilliant, non-linear people get passed over because nobody taught them how to run it.
That’s what Career Nomad is. That’s what I’m building.

If your resume doesn’t make sense on paper but you’ve done everything — this is for you.

The most underestimated professional in today’s workforce?

A Black woman who has stopped waiting to be discovered —and started building her own distribution.

She’s not asking for a seat at the table.
She’s using AI to build the table, book herself on the stage and send the invoice before they realize what happened.

We weren’t kept out because we weren’t qualified.

We were kept out because qualified was never really the requirement.

But here’s what changes now:

👉🏾When your output speaks before you walk in the room —
👉🏾When your visibility can’t be managed by someone else’s comfort level —
👉🏾When AI gives you the leverage that access used to gatekeep —

The game shifts.

Not because they finally let us in.
Because we stopped needing permission to play.

We were never the missing piece.
We were always the missing ingredient.

Atlanta. 124 surveillance cameras per 1,000 residents. More than almost any city on Earth — outside a handful in China..60,000+ cameras. AI robots patrolling parking lots. Systems designed to generate suspicion before a crime happens. And the first testing ground? A majority-Black neighborhood. This is what “AI is neutral” actually looks like in practice. I don't ask if this is this fair.
I ask: who is now carrying the downside?
Because the people without a seat at the Al decision table don’t just miss the opportunity.
They become the subject of the decision.
Atlanta is the case study.
Your city is next.
Visibility is not vanity.
It is economic defense.
