The light does something different this time of year. Ninety-some days out from first chair and we're already replaying runs in our heads, and yeah, we know it's still September.

There's a particular kind of quiet on a dusk run. The mountain empties out, the light goes gold, and it's just you and the last few turns before the lift closes. Some of you know exactly the run we mean.

What's your last-run-of-the-day spot?

Heart says winter. Weather says fall. Sound familiar? The Tuscany lite was built for exactly that in-between stretch, when you're ready for the mountain before the mountain's ready for you. Ski-ready details when the first storm rolls in, everyday comfort and storage for the weeks before that. Built the way Obermeyer builds everything: to actually earn its spot in your closet.

What's your go-to jacket for the fall-to-winter switch over?

Klaus has never needed a metaphor. He just talks about skiing, and somehow it comes out sounding like the whole plan for a life.

Aim at the mountain you mean to hit, not the one next to it, and you'll get there. That's the short version of what he told us when we asked if he ever doubted himself starting out.

His full answer: "You always get to where you aim to." He was talking about 1947, working out skis and poles and clothing that didn't exist yet, whenever he wasn't in a class or teaching. No hesitation, no what was I thinking. Just the aim, and the work.

Almost eighty years later, he's still out there, and the math hasn't changed.

What's the best piece of advice a parent or mentor ever gave you, the kind that ended up mattering for more than they meant it to?

Long before Aspen, Klaus was already living this. Somewhere in the Bavarian Alps, sometime in the 1930s or 40s: no lift line, no trail map, just skis, a rope, an ice axe, and enough wool and leather to get through whatever the day handed him.

There was no company yet. No Obermeyer. Just a young man who already understood something that would end up mattering for the next eighty years: the gear has to actually work, because nobody's coming to get you if it doesn't.

That's the same idea behind Off Grid Layering today. Different fabrics, same math.

Anyone else grow up hearing stories like this, from a parent or grandparent who skied before it looked anything like it does now? We'd love to hear them.

By 1947, Aspen had already had one boom and gone bust. Silver mining collapsed decades earlier, and half the town sat empty. It wasn't a ski resort yet. That part was still being built, one small ski school and a handful of instructors at a time.

Klaus was one of those instructors, recruited from Germany to teach.

"I put my skis down in the morning and the snow just flew like feathers, like down. I thought, wow! This is the friendliest, nicest climate I've ever seen."

He'd spend the next several decades chasing that exact feeling into a goose-down parka, then a company. Turns out "like down" wasn't just a figure of speech.

This button is older than a lot of our customers.

Found this piece in the archive. Hand-finished hardware, a tag that just reads "Original Obermeyer, since 1947." Somebody cared about a detail nobody would ever really notice.

That's still how we build things. The zip pull on this year's Furry Fleece Top gets the same attention this button got seventy-plus years ago. Details make the gear. They always have.

Klaus's 100th birthday secret, in full: swim before breakfast, hit the gym, wipe the mirror clean, and decide right then what kind of day you're going to have.

Back in 2019, when Klaus Obermeyer turned 100, The Aspen Times asked him for his secret. He gave it up without much fuss: swim a half mile before breakfast, get to the gym, and every morning, before anything else, wipe the mirror clean.

That last part was the real answer. Klaus called it the mirror of perception, the choice you make every single day about whether to see the mountain, the weather, and the whole business of getting older as something to love or something to dread. He picked love. Every morning, on purpose.

Nearly eighty years since he first strapped into skis in Aspen, that's still the whole philosophy behind everything we make.

Don't know about you, but we're choosing fun too. What's your version of wiping the mirror clean before the day starts?

Treat the mountain like a lab. Treat every drop like the only experiment that matters.

That’s how Colter Hinchliffe, Tim Durtschi, and Anna Tedesco ski, and it’s how our gear gets tested. All three are in ‘Actually, It Is Rocket Science’, Teton Gravity Research's 31st annual film.

Color moves downhill before the snow does. Up above treeline, the tundra's already turning, first sign that summer's on its way out. The aspens won't catch up for a few more weeks yet, but this is how it always starts.

There's a version of you that's up before the lifts start turning, and a version that's perfectly happy showing up for the view and a long lunch. Neither one is wrong. They just dress differently for the day.

We built this one for anyone who's ever stood in a lift line wondering if they layered right. Swipe through, and tell us in the comments: first chair or first coffee?
