The Friends of Asheville Muni is volunteer organized and run. When you join, you are funding a bench, a bag of loaner clubs, an acre of wildflowers.

We are a volunteer board of Asheville neighbors and golfers working to enhance Asheville's historic municipal golf course as a welcoming, affordable, and enjoyable place for everyone. Muni has done that job for nearly a century, and it is worth protecting for the next one.

Thursday evening we are planting flowers at Muni, and this one is exciting!

Native plugs are arriving and on Thursday, October 1 they go in the ground. It is a great many plants and it will take a great many hands.

No golf required, no experience required. Bring gloves. Friends of Asheville Muni has the rest.

Two years ago today, the Swannanoa River flooded its banks and altered our shared landscape forever. While we mark the damage done to our own grounds, we pause first to remember those across Western North Carolina who suffered far deeper losses.

We also reflect on the neighbors who immediately stepped in to clear roads, share clean water, provide shelter, and support one another through the weeks that followed. The work of recovery remains ongoing, but the resolve across this region has not wavered.

We remain committed to this community and are grateful to stand alongside you as neighbors.

Public golf is rarer than it used to be, and easier to lose than people think. We know better than ever due to Helene taking our our front nine holes.

Muni opened in 1927 as a course for working people, and it is still Western North Carolina's affordable, open-to-all place to play. No membership to buy at the clubhouse. No waiting list. Nobody checking whether or not you belong. First-timers, retirees, school teams, and people who have played here for forty years, all on the same first tee.

Friends of Asheville Muni exists to enhance Asheville's historic municipal golf course as a welcoming, affordable, and enjoyable place for everyone.

Muni is where Western North Carolina learns the game and thousands of rounds are played each year through youth programs.

It hosts First Tee of WNC and the PGA Jr. League, and it opens the course to school teams that would not otherwise have one. Friends of Asheville Muni funds the junior equipment that lets kids who do not own clubs take part along with other support for these programs.

If you want to be a part of supporting youth golf in the area, join the Friends for $50 a year: https://www.friendsofashevillemuni.com/join

The 66th Annual Skyview Golf Tournament is being played today and tomorrow at the Country Club of Asheville.

The tournament was first played at Asheville Muni in 1959, and it is one of the largest African-American-operated golf tournaments in the United States. It is away from the Muni again this year while the front nine is out of play, and we are as proud as ever to support them.

Friends of Asheville Muni is proud to help get the word out. Good luck to everyone playing!

Every Monday and Wednesday this fall, there are kids golfing at Muni.

First Tee of Western North Carolina runs fall programming at Asheville Municipal Golf Course through October 14. Mondays for ages 7 to 9 and for ages 10 and up, Wednesdays for ages 7 to 9, plus a Girls Golf Club open to ages 7 to 18.

First Tee runs the program and Friends of Asheville Muni funds the loaner clubs so a kid who does not own a set can still take part.

In 1927, a public Donald Ross course was a radical idea.

Ross was a Hall of Fame architect and he mostly designed for the private game. However, he laid Muni out for working people. It opened as one of the first public golf courses in North Carolina, and almost a hundred years later it is still doing the job it was built to do.

Last call. Birdies for Charity donations close at 5:00 PM today.

Guess how many birdies the field makes at the Biltmore Championship this week, give $20 or more, and 100 percent of it goes to Friends of Asheville Muni and straight into projects at Asheville's public golf course.

Five o'clock. Then it is done for the year. Guess and give: https://friendsofashevillemuni.com/birdies

There is a bench on the back nine that your neighbors paid for.

Friends of Asheville Muni funded new benches at several back-nine tees at the Muni, and a full renovation of the back-nine restroom. It is not glamorous work. That is exactly the point. These are the things that make a public round more comfortable for everyone who plays.
