If you've ever wondered why bluegill seem to have an attitude problem this time of year... here's your answer😤🐟
Spawn and nesting season is wrapping up! Male bluegill spend late spring and and early summer building circular nests in shallow water, then stand guard for up to 10 days while their eggs develop. During that time, they'll aggressively chase off just about anything they see as a threat - including other fish, fishing lures, and turtles.
To us, it looks hilarious. To them, it's a matter of national security. You can easily spot nest colonies near the shoreline - keep an eye out for the saucer-shaped nests and the tiny but fearless defenders protecting them.
