Sometimes an injury changes our trajectory. But sooner or later if we don't learn to overcome it, that problem will continue to compound until we can't ignore it.
It's important to understand that doing what you can is significantly better than doing nothing. So when we suffer an injury, we should allow time to heal. While we heal, it's important to continue putting in work on the elements of our fitness that are unaffected.
Human beings are remarkable compensators. Our bodies can find a way to work around an issue, but often that means taking the stress the injured tissue should be supporting and overloading another area. And if we don't challenge a weakened or dysfunctional area to return to function, we are condemning it to become less and less viable in the future. Eventually, if we avoid the necessary work to return to form, it will get more and more difficult until it feels insurmountable.
Chances are, a nagging injury has an opportunity to heal beyond what we expect with the right discipline and guidance. The question is, are we willing to do the work? And are we willing to embrace that challenge before we backslide so far that the road back is exponentially further?
You've been injured. It's frustrating. I get it. Take a moment. Do what you can.
But understand that you can return to the old version of yourself if you are willing to try. Don't give up on the freedom to do what you want. You can do it. And you deserve it.
