Welcome back to Movement Monday!
This month we are focusing on core strength. Today we are doing Flutter Kicks.
How to do it:
Lie flat on your back with your legs straight and your hands tucked under your glutes for support. Lift both legs a few inches off the ground and alternate kicking them up and down in a small, controlled motion, keeping your legs as straight as possible. Keep your lower back pressed into the floor throughout the movement.
Tip: the lower you keep your legs, the harder your core has to work. Start higher off the ground if you're just getting started and lower them as you build strength.

Welcome back to Movement Monday! This month we are focusing on core strength.
Today we are doing Heel Touches.
How to do it:
Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, hip width apart. Raise your shoulders slightly off the ground and keep them there throughout the movement. Reach one hand down toward your heel on the same side, then alternate to the other side and repeat. Keep the movement controlled and continuous.
Tip: the key is to crunch through your side, not just reach with your arm. Focus on squeezing your obliques with each touch for maximum results.

Welcome back to Movement Monday! This month we are focusing on core strength. Today we are doing Russian Twists.
How to do it:
Sit on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat on the ground. Lean back slightly until you feel your core engage, keeping your back straight. Clasp your hands together or hold a weight in front of you. From there, rotate your upper body to one side, bringing your hands toward the floor beside your hip, then twist to the other side and repeat. For an added challenge, lift your feet off the ground.
Tip: the movement should come from your core rotating, not just your arms swinging. Go slow and stay in control.
Give this one a try and let us know what you think!

Cat-Cow Stretch: Welcome back to Movement Monday! This month we are focusing on spine mobility. Today we are doing the Cat Cow Pose!
How to do it:
Start on all fours with your hands under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Take a deep breath in and let your belly drop toward the floor, lifting your chest and tailbone up toward the ceiling. Then move into the Cat position by breathing out and rounding your spine up toward the ceiling, tucking your chin to your chest and your tailbone under. Flow back and forth between the two positions at a slow, controlled pace.
Tip: let your breath guide the movement. Inhale into Cow, exhale into Cat. The more you sync your breath with the stretch, the better it feels.
This is one of the best movements for spinal health and a great way to warm up your back before any workout. Give it a try and let us know what you think!

๐ง TRAFFIC UPDATE ๐ง
A friendly reminder that roadway construction is currently impacting access to The Beacon Recreation Center.
โ
The Beacon remains OPEN and accessible through local access routes.
Beginning June 24, the roadway will reopen to traffic in one direction only, allowing travel westbound from Collins Street to Silo Rd.
As construction continues, we encourage all visitors to:
๐ Allow extra travel time
๐ฆ Expect possible traffic delays and backups
๐ฆบ Follow all posted traffic signs and detours
โ ๏ธ Drive safely through construction zones
We appreciate your patience as these improvements are completed and look forward to smoother travels ahead!
Thank you for continuing to visit The Beacon, and we can't wait to see you soon!
๐ง๐ Water Update: The Plot Twist We Were Hoping For! ๐๐ง
Much like Texas weather, our water situation couldn't quite decide what it wanted to do... but we're happy to report that the water has officially been restored to the building! ๐
After going back and forth more than a Texas forecast in the spring, our faucets are flowing, restrooms are open, and water fountains are back in action.
We sincerely appreciate everyone's patience, flexibility, and understanding as we worked through this unexpected challenge. Thank you to our incredible staff, members, parents, and guests for rolling with the punches and keeping a positive attitude throughout.
We're back to normal operations and ready to continue making this summer a great one at The Beacon! โ๏ธ๐ฆ
Now let's all enjoy some water the way it was intendedโcoming out of the faucet and not causing surprise schedule changes! ๐
Thoracic Wall Windmills: Welcome back to Movement Monday! This month, we are focusing on spine mobility. Today, we are doing Thoracic Wall Windmills!
How to do it:
Start with your knee on the ground near a wall. Stretch your arms out along the wall and rotate clockwise with your arm staying attached to the wall the whole time.
Tip: Keep your knees in contact with the wall the whole time. This locks your lower body in place, so the rotation comes from your upper back.
This is a fantastic stretch to loosen up a stiff upper back and improve your overall rotation. Add it to your warm-up or cool-down and let us know what you think!
