What is ACTUALLY costing you strokes?

You can have a good golf swing.

You can hit plenty of good shots.

And still not shoot the scores you know you’re capable of.

That’s exactly why Talon and his family drove down from Wichita Falls looking for some clarity.

Talon is a high school golfer with a good swing and solid ball-control skills.

So the question wasn’t:

“How can we make his swing look better?”

It was:

“What is keeping him from shooting lower scores?”

And there was only one place I wanted to start looking.

The golf course.

We played 18 holes using our on-course assessment and scorecard system to evaluate what was actually happening when Talon played.

What shots can he execute?

Where do certain situations expose weaknesses?

How is he navigating the golf course?

What decisions is he making?

And where are the strokes actually being lost?

By the end of the round, we had answers.

There were specific skills we could improve.

Shots we could add to his toolbox.

And opportunities to help him better see the golf course and manage his ball around it.

Then we spent another hour turning everything we learned into specific practice priorities he can take home and train.

That’s the part that matters.

Talon didn’t leave wondering what he should work on.

He left with a roadmap.

If you’re putting in the work but your scores aren’t changing, don’t automatically assume you need another swing change.

Find out what’s ACTUALLY costing you strokes.

Then put your time and effort into what actually matters.

Great first day with Talon. 👊

Pretty special seeing one of your players get an opportunity like this. 👊⛳️

Malisone has put in a tremendous amount of work over the years and this week she takes another step in her journey as she competes in the LPGA Q-Series in Houston.

I’ve been fortunate to have a front-row seat for a lot of that journey and I couldn’t be more excited to see her get this opportunity.

Now it’s time to trust the work, trust your game and go compete.

Good luck this week, Mali! We’re all pulling for you. 👊

And best of luck to fellow UNT letterwinner Ellie as well!

What if the thing you thought was helping you is actually holding you back?

That’s a tough realization for any golfer.

Bobby came in for his assessment looking for one thing:

Clarity.

He wanted to understand his game, identify his priorities, and leave knowing exactly what he needed to work on.

And there were quite a few “aha” moments along the way.

Listen to Bobby in the video:

“That’s the most important thing I’ve ever heard about golf.”

Then, after putting it into action:

“So much better.”

I love moments like this.

Because sometimes the breakthrough isn’t about working harder or adding another swing thought.

It’s realizing that something you’ve believed - or tried to do for years - may actually be the very thing holding you back.

That’s what an assessment should provide.

Not just more numbers.
Not 10 more swing thoughts.

Clarity. Priorities. A roadmap.

Because once you understand why something is happening, figuring out what needs to change becomes a whole lot easier.

Wait until you see what’s next. 👀

Assessment First. Roadmap Always.

Pebble Beach is next. ⛳️

Pretty special day at the academy.

Carter was back in training today for some final preparation before leaving Friday for an incredible opportunity.

Next week, he’ll compete at Pebble Beach in the PURE Insurance Championship through First Tee.

At this point, we’re not trying to reinvent anything.

We’re sharpening what matters.

Know his patterns.
Trust his skills.
Play with confidence.

There’s a time to make changes.

There’s a time to train and build skills.

And there’s a time to trust all the work you’ve put in and go compete.

This is one of those times.

Pretty awesome watching Carter earn an opportunity like this and even better knowing how much work has gone into getting here.

Now go enjoy it, trust your game, and compete. 👊⛳️

Pebble Beach awaits.

Ever feel like your swing should be producing more… but the speed and distance just aren’t there?

That’s frustrating.

You’re making what feels like a decent swing.

You’re putting in the work.

But you’re not getting the return you feel like you should.

Then sometimes, one clear priority changes everything.

After working on one of his backswing priorities, this player sent me his results:

+5 mph swing speed
+15 yards distance
+10 feet peak height
Improved smash factor

Pretty awesome.

But the numbers aren’t actually my favorite part.

The clarity is.

He understands what was limiting him.

He knows what needed to change.

And now he knows exactly what to continue working on.

That’s what good coaching should create.

Not more confusion.
Not another collection of random swing thoughts.

Clarity.

Because if you feel like your game should be better than it is, maybe you don’t need to work harder.

Maybe you need to make sure you’re working on the right thing.

“Am I actually doing this right?”

That’s one of the hardest questions for a golfer to answer when their coach isn’t standing beside them.

And it’s exactly why a roadmap needs to include more than just what to change.

With Kensley, we’ve continued adding layers to her development - not to make her swing more complicated, but to make the route clearer.

Where does she need to go?

What movement helps her get there?

And when does enough become too much?

Yesterday, we added a little more “in” to help clean up her arc, with some additional trail-hip depth early.

Then came the important part:

How does Kensley know she’s practicing it correctly when I’m not there?

A couple of alignment sticks.

A clear pathway.

Boom. Practice station created.

Now when Kensley goes to high school practice or heads to the range on her own, she doesn’t have to guess.

She has a destination.

She has boundaries.

She has feedback.

That’s what I want for my players.

I don’t want them leaving a lesson simply knowing what we worked on.

I want them knowing exactly how to continue the work without me.

The roadmap can be detailed.

The task for the player should be clear.

The first goal on the roadmap? CHECK. ✅

When Mia and her family made the decision to join Dennis Sales Golf Academy, they had a reason.

Mia wanted to elevate her game.

So we established where she was, identified the priorities, built the roadmap, and got to work.

One of the first goals?

Make the varsity team as a freshman.

Mission accomplished. 👊

Mia was back in training today and it’s pretty awesome to look back and see how far her swing and skills have already come.

But here’s what I love:

Making varsity wasn’t the destination. It was proof that we’re moving in the right direction.

Mia and her family made a commitment to her development.

We provided the plan.

And Mia has put in the work.

Now we keep building. Keep measuring. Keep developing her technique and skills. And keep preparing her for the next goal.

That’s what a roadmap is supposed to do.

Give a player a destination, create a pathway to get there, and provide checkpoints along the way that show the work is paying off.

First goal accomplished, Mia. ✅

Now let’s go chase the next one. 👊

Assessment First. Roadmap Always.

Does your backswing always feel like something is missing?

You work on getting the club more back.

Then more in.

Then your arms need to go more up.

Fix one piece, and somehow another one gets worse.

There may be a reason for that.

Yesterday, we talked about kinematics vs. kinetics. Today, let’s keep building on it.

Once we’ve better organized how the player moves, what are we actually trying to accomplish?

Remember, the golf swing is circular in nature - but that circle exists on a tilted plane around the golfer.

That means the backswing is a three-dimensional blend of:

BACK. IN. UP.

Not just back.

Not just in.

Not just up.

It’s the blend that matters.

Too much of one component changes the geometry and influences what has to happen next.

That’s what I’m explaining in this video.

We’re not trying to independently place the arms or club into some perfect-looking position.

We’re organizing the backswing so the pieces work together.

Yesterday, we talked about organizing the player.

Today, we’re taking that another step further and looking at how everything blends together during the backswing.

Because if you’ve spent months trying different backswing thoughts and nothing seems to stay fixed, maybe you don’t need another isolated thought.

Maybe you need to understand how the pieces are supposed to blend together.

Assessment First. Roadmap Always.

What happens when you lose confidence in the clubs you need most?

This player came in struggling with his longer clubs off the ground and the driver had become such a problem that simply getting off the tee was difficult.

That’s frustrating.

And it’s exactly why we need to understand why the motion is happening before we start throwing swing changes at a player.

For me, the gold standard is kinematics.

Does that mean kinetics doesn’t matter?

Absolutely not.

Force precedes motion. Anatomy matters. How you create and apply force matters. And all of it influences the movement options available to you.

For this player, reducing the gapping and adding a little “Rory” helped him better organize how he moved around the trail-side reference line.

That allowed him to elevate his arms without feeling disconnected.

From there, we could start adding the missing pieces to help the club arrive at “ASSEMBLY POINT” with a better relationship between his COM, hands, and elbow plane.

But here’s the important part:

We weren’t chasing positions because we liked how they looked.

We were changing the pieces that were preventing him from producing the shots he needed.

Kinematics tells us what moved.

Kinetics helps us understand the forces behind the movement.

Great coaching requires understanding how all the pieces work together—then simplifying them for the player.

Because ultimately, he doesn’t care about kinematics or kinetics.

He wants to stand over his driver knowing he can get the ball in play.

The goal was simple: Make the high school varsity team.

But wanting it and having a plan to get there are two very different things.

We assessed his game.

Built the roadmap.

Established his practice priorities.

Trained.

Developed strategies for taking those skills to the golf course.

Then he did the most important part:

He put in the work.

And today, I got this text. 👊

“Hey Coach Sales, just thought I’d let you know, I made varsity!”

Man, I love getting messages like this.

Goal established.
Roadmap built.
Work put in.
Goal accomplished.

Now?

We reassess, establish the next set of priorities, and build the next roadmap.

Because making varsity wasn’t the final destination.

It was the next checkpoint.

Congratulations! You earned it. 👊
