Safe travels to Mexico! 🦋 Monarch Watch tags were placed, and wing lengths were recorded.

We still have tags! If you have Monarch butterflies that you caught or reared and would like to tag them, come to the Nature Center anytime it is open, or call the Naturalist at 1(440) 858-7107 to schedule a time while he is in the park.

Meeting at the Nature Center August 22nd at 5:00Pm. We will be tagging Monarch butterflies while learning how to safely hold them and place the tag as they travel south. A chance for folks to participate in some hands-on citizens science work.

We are asking those with pollinator patches in the area who are able to safely net and transport our colorful friends to bring them into the Nature Center to add to the data pool.

We are limited to 50 tags but all are welcome. It will allow us to better judge how many we would need for next year!

‼️ATTENTION‼️ Permanent Road Closure Notice🛑
The road from the south end of Cabin Beach area to Birches Marina is permanently closed for a paved bike path conversion. The entire roadway is closed to all vehicle traffic. Visitors should use alternate routes to access these areas.

American lotus is quite an impressive native wildflower. Its leaves, which can grow up to two feet wide, provide habitat for aquatic invertebrates and young fish alike. In addition to supporting dragonflies, damselflies, and many other native pollinators, American lotus serves as the host plant for the American lotus borer (Ostrinia penitalis), whose larvae feed on every part of the plant—from the seeds to the stems.

Come fall, you may notice muskrat huts by the causeway in areas where American lotus grows, as muskrats gather the stems and tubers to eat throughout the winter. You might even catch a flock of waterfowl dabbling on the water's surface, feeding on the floating seeds to fuel their migration south.
