They were down to their fourth-string quarterback and saw their all-state fullback leave with a shoulder injury in the first half, yet the Stars had no chill and pushed Wyoming’s top-ranked team until the very end Saturday.

Regardless of who’s on the field for the Soldotna football team, the program’s pound-the-rock rallying cry carries on, a testament to the next-man-up culture. Armed with their famed wing-T formation, the Stars are always a threat.

They amassed 352 rushing yards and dominated time of possession to carve up Star Valley’s defense like a pumpkin, but the Braves of Afton, Wyo., survived to tell the tale after posting a 35-28 win at Justin Maile Field.

Outside hitter Lee Ivakina’s first season with the UAA volleyball team last year was one to remember: All-GNAC first team honors, top eight in the conference in both kills and points per set, and double-digit kills in 24 of 29 matches, to name a few.

But according to Ivakina, she’s just now hitting her stride. The 6-foot hitter from Varna, Bulgaria, has become an integral part of a Seawolf squad that finished 23-6 last season, sharing the GNAC title and landing a NCAA tournament bid. Last week, she and fellow senior Bella Burney were named to the preseason All-GNAC team.

The dynamic duo combined for 313 all-purpose yards and had a hand in all four touchdowns to power the Golden Bears to a 28-10 victory over the Wolfpack at West Valley High School.

Midfielders Blake Plummer of Juneau and Addysen Gasser of Anchorage each found the back of the net and Gasser added an assist. Defenseman Brooklyn Bailey played 49 minutes.

As the last piece added to the UAA volleyball team’s recruiting class, Kyana Gabriel was late to join the Seawolves. But on Thursday she was right on time, boosting Anchorage when it needed a lift.

Gabriel slammed 11 of her 14 kills in a pivotal second set and then ended the match with a blast off the block, capping the Seawolves’ come-from-behind victory over Texas Woman’s University at the Alaska Airlines Center.

A crowd of nearly 1,000 — including a dozen decked out in full hockey gear — watched UAA pull out a 19-25, 25-12, 25-13, 25-21 victory in its home opener on Day 1 of the three-day Seawolf Invitational.

For the Soldotna and Star Valley football teams to realize what each other is facing when they meet on Saturday afternoon, all either team must do is look in the mirror. The resemblance is striking.

Since 2023, the Class 3A Braves of Afton, Wyo., have lost only one game, just like Soldotna; and the Stars have won three straight state titles, just like Star Valley. Both teams have averaged more than 40 points over the last three years and will put long winning streaks on the line when they collide at Soldotna High School.

But Kenai Central newcomer Snowdon Bear Williams took versatility to a new level in last week’s 68-18 win over Redington at Ed Hollier Field on the Peninsula.

Williams piled up 237 all-purpose yards and is believed to be the first Alaska player to score five touchdowns five different ways – pick six, rushing, receiving, kick return and punt return.
