A five-year-old roping goats off the back of a Shetland pony. A fourteen-year-old good enough that jackpot promoters kicked him out of the beginner league and forced him to face the best ropers in the world instead. By twenty, he'd already built the house that Vegas rodeo lives in.
Born October 13, 1965, in Victoria, Texas, Joe Beaver started roping at five years old, and by fifteen he was already making waves through the professional roping world. He got so good so fast that the local jackpot circuits refused to let him compete against beginners anymore — they threw him straight into the top-level A-league matches against grown men who'd been roping for decades.
He said it himself, looking back on just how hard those years pushed him — "Besides the rodeos, there were all those matches. I'd run 300-400 practice calves that week getting ready for them." Every Sunday night, he'd drive home and turn his pockets inside out onto his parents Walter and Bonnie's breakfast table before school Monday morning.
In 1985, at just twenty years old, Joe Beaver won the PRCA Resistol Rookie of the Year award and walked into the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas as the youngest tie-down roper in the field. Ten days later, he left with his first World Championship. The Thomas & Mack Center became known from that point forward as "the house that Joe built."
He never stopped building. Beaver added back-to-back tie-down roping titles in 1987 and 1988, then two more in 1992 and 1996 — five world tie-down championships total. His skill as a team roping header combined with his calf roping to earn him back-to-back World Champion All-Around Cowboy titles in 1995 and 1996. Then, in 2000, at 35 years old and after injuries had sidelined him for most of 1999 — forcing him to spend that NFR as an ESPN commentator instead of a competitor — he came back and won his third and final all-around crown.
He qualified for the National Finals Rodeo seventeen times in calf roping between 1985 and 2001, plus several more in team roping. He said what drove him through every one of those years — "I've got a gift. If you're lucky enough to have a gift, you should use it until it no longer benefits you or your sport. Nobody loves to rope more than me."
When his body finally gave out after roping an estimated five million practice calves over a lifetime, he walked away on his own terms. "My heart still wanted it, but my body gave out and had to give up. You've got to walk away with your pride and dignity."
Eight world titles. Over $2 million in career earnings. Inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 2002. In 2024, Joe Beaver was honored as an NFR Icon in Las Vegas, alongside team roping legends Speed Williams and Rich Skelton.
