What actually makes up The Competitive Depth Method™?

The Method is built around five interconnected pillars:

🧠 Mind–Body Connection
💪 Confidence & Resilience
🤝 Community & Environment
❤️ Whole-Athlete Health
⚡ Integration & Flow

Together, they reflect something we've learned through decades of working with athletes:

Peak performance requires more than one tool, one strategy, or one part of the athlete.

The Competitive Depth Method™ gives us a framework for understanding and working with the many factors that influence performance — helping athletes build greater confidence, capacity, resilience and adaptability, and access more of what they already know how to do under pressure.

Learn more about each pillar and The Competitive Depth Method™ on the new Competitive Advantage website.

You can know exactly what to think — and still have your body respond very differently when the pressure is on.

This understanding has been evolving within Competitive Advantage for decades and is at the heart of the newly defined Competitive Depth Method™.

The Method integrates proven mental performance training with nervous system science, body intelligence, whole-athlete care, and the systems surrounding an athlete — helping athletes develop the capacity to access their skills and potential when it matters most.

This is the next evolution of the work we've been doing for decades, and I'm so excited to finally have language and structure around it.

If you've been part of the Competitive Advantage community for a long time, you probably know my dad, Dr. Alan Goldberg — or Dr. G, as thousands of athletes have known him.

My dad has spent more than 40 years helping athletes understand and master the mental side of performance.

One of the things I admire most about his work is that he never stopped learning.

When he began encountering athletes whose fears, blocks, lost skills, and other repetitive performance problems could only be taken so far with mental toughness strategies, he got curious about what else might be happening underneath the struggle.

That curiosity eventually led him to Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing®, and a deeper understanding of how the brain, body, and nervous system impact performance.

Years later, that became one of the places where our work came together.

For more than a decade, I've had the opportunity to learn directly from my dad, work alongside him, and integrate what he taught me into my own work.

Our paths have been different.

But the mission has always been remarkably similar:

Help people unlock their potential and access more of what they're capable of — especially when the pressure is on.

Today, as I carry Competitive Advantage forward, that shared mission remains at the heart of everything I'm building.

My dad's work is the foundation I'm standing on.

And even as he steps back from client work, we'll continue collaborating on creative projects and finding new ways to share what we've learned.

This is the next generation of Competitive Advantage. ❤️

“I don't know. I just feel off.”

We hear some version of this from athletes all the time.

😕Something that normally feels easy or automatic suddenly doesn't.

😣You're thinking about movements you normally just DO.

🤨Your timing feels different.

😬You're hesitating.

😥You're trying to recreate what you did the last time you performed well.

😤You're working harder, thinking harder, practicing more, trying to fix whatever seems to have disappeared.

Very often, an athlete’s first response is to start trying to fix their mechanics.

What am I doing wrong?
Is my form off?
Did something change in my technique?
Do I need to adjust this? Change that? Practice it more?

Sometimes there IS something mechanical that needs attention.

And sometimes what you’re experiencing has very little to do with your mechanics.

Pressure can change how you feel in your body.

Stress can make you tense.

Nerves can make you rush.

Fear of making a mistake can make you hesitate or try to control your movements.

Thinking about the outcome can pull your attention away from what you're doing.

Trying really hard to perform well can turn into forcing something that normally happens automatically.

A disappointing performance can leave you questioning something you trusted a week ago.

All of these things can change the way a familiar skill FEELS.

When something feels different, it's easy to assume you're DOING something different.

That's when athletes can start tinkering with mechanics, consciously monitoring their movements, making corrections, and thinking their way through skills their bodies already know how to do.

Sometimes all of that fixing creates even more interference.

When a familiar skill suddenly feels “off,” get curious before you start taking apart your mechanics.

Ask yourself:

👉🏼What’s different right now?
👉🏼Am I tense or rushing?
👉🏼Where is my attention?
👉🏼Am I trying too hard?
👉🏼Am I worried about the outcome?
👉🏼Am I afraid of making a mistake?
👉🏼Am I thinking about something I normally let happen automatically?
👉🏼Am I carrying frustration from something that already happened?

Maybe there IS a mechanical adjustment to make, and your coach can help you identify it.

Or maybe you need to slow down.

Take a breath.

Simplify your focus.

Reconnect with your self and TRUST your training.

Let yourself perform instead of trying to consciously control every part of your performance.

Something feeling different doesn't automatically mean your mechanics changed.

Get curious about what's actually happening before you start trying to fix it.

If you’re stuck trying to figure out what changed in your performance, 1-1 coaching can help you understand what’s getting in the way and find a path forward. Reach out and let’s start a conversation.

Every athlete makes mistakes.

A missed shot.
A bad pass.
A fall.
A false start.
A routine that doesn't go as planned.

Mistakes are part of becoming good at something.

When you're learning, stretching your skills, competing at higher levels, and pushing the edges of what you're capable of, there are going to be moments when things don't work.

One of the most important mental skills you can develop as an athlete is how quickly you can come back after a mistake.

Sometimes, the mistake itself isn't nearly as big as it feels in the moment.

A missed shot can simply be a missed shot. A bad pass can simply be a bad pass. But the meaning you attach to it — “I blew it. I'm playing terribly. I can't do that again.” — can make that one moment feel much bigger than it actually was and then keep you stuck there.

The mistake itself may only last a second, but… how long does it actually stay with you?

🥴Do you replay it in your head?
😠Get frustrated with yourself?
😕Start worrying about making the same mistake again?
😖Tighten up or start trying too hard to make up for it?
😩Carry it into the next play, point, shot, race, or routine?

This is how one mistake can start impacting the moments that follow it.

Your attention is still connected to what ALREADY happened. Your body may still be carrying the frustration or activation from it. Instead of being fully available for what's happening NOW, part of you is still back there.

Mistake recovery is a skill. It is something you can train and build and get really good at.

The goal during competition is to get back to the present as quickly as you can.

👉🏼Take a breath.
👉🏼Let your body reset.
👉🏼Bring your attention back to what is happening right now.
👉🏼Refocus: What's my job in this moment?

There will be time later to look at what happened, learn from it, and decide what you want to do differently.

During competition: recover.
After competition: reflect.

The more you practice coming back, the less power one mistake has to impact everything that comes after it.

So the next time something goes wrong, practice asking yourself:

How fast can I come back?

If you’re looking for customized support in learning how to recover from mistakes and reset under pressure, reach out. Let’s start a conversation about how 1-1 coaching may be a good fit for you.

For the last 20 months, I've found myself coming back to one question again and again:

How do I take everything Competitive Advantage has been for more than 40 years and build a home that reflects where this work is going next?

Because there is a LOT of history here.

My dad, Dr. Alan Goldberg, built Competitive Advantage over four decades of working with athletes, coaches, and parents around the world.

He was a pioneer in the mental toughness field and he never stopped being curious about why some athletes could know exactly what they needed to do and still lose access to their skills under pressure.

As he encountered athletes whose fears, blocks, and lost skills weren't shifting with mental strategies alone, he kept expanding his approach — eventually integrating Brainspotting, Somatic Experiencing® and nervous system work into the mental performance foundation he had already built.

Years later, it became one of the places where our work came together.

My own path began 25 years ago in education and guidance counseling, eventually leading me into somatics, nervous system capacity expansion, whole-person health, and peak performance.

And for more than a decade, I've had the opportunity to learn from and work alongside my dad while continuing to develop my own approach.

When I took over Competitive Advantage about 20 months ago, I knew I didn't want to simply preserve what my dad had created.

I wanted to honor it by continuing to evolve it.

That's what I've been working on behind the scenes.

I've been digging into more than 40 years of knowledge, tools, resources, and experience and asking:

👉🏼What stays?
👉🏼What grows?
👉🏼What's missing?
👉🏼What do athletes need today?
👉🏼What do the parents and coaches supporting them need?

💥 I've gotten clearer about what Competitive Advantage stands for.

💥 I've put language and structure around the method underneath this work.

💥 I've expanded areas I'm deeply passionate about and want to bring further into the world.

💥 And I've been building a new home for all of it.

One that honors where Competitive Advantage has been.

One that reflects who we are and the work we do today.

And one that creates space for where I'm taking it next.

We're almost ready to open the doors. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I can't wait to show you. 🙌🏼

Hi all, Sara here. 👋🏼 For the last year and a half, I've been working on something pretty big behind the scenes at Competitive Advantage.

When I took over the business from my dad, one of the things that mattered most to me was figuring out how to carry forward everything he had spent more than 40 years building, while also creating space for the work to continue growing and evolving.

And there has been a LOT of evolving happening. 😊

And along the way, my dad and I have continued building on what he started — learning from each other, bringing our different areas of expertise together, and allowing the work to evolve into something that reflects both of us.

Over the last 20 months, I've been working to bring all of those pieces together in a way that more fully reflects who Competitive Advantage is today and where we're headed next.

And we're almost ready to share it. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

There is something brand new coming to Competitive Advantage very soon, and I cannot wait for you to see what we've been building…

Stay tuned. 🙌🏼

Great teams are built with both talent and strong leadership.

Leadership is a skill athletes can develop, strengthen, and carry with them both in and beyond their sport.

Coaches, want more leadership on your team? Don’t wait for it to magically appear. Train it.

Here’s how:

👉🏼Give athletes responsibility. Let athletes lead warm-ups, organize drills, or set the tone in the locker room.

👉🏼Foster communication. Teach them to speak up with clarity — on the field, in the pool, or in the gym.

👉🏼Model resilience. Show them how to lead with calm, courage, and presence when things get tough.

Leadership grows when athletes are given space to rise and support to succeed.

When you train leadership like a skill, you build stronger and more resilient humans.

Want support developing your team’s leadership culture? We offer custom workshops for athletes and coaches — in person or online. Reach out to [email protected] or visit competitivedge.com to learn more.
