Happy Juneteenth! This photo from our collection shows Mary Lou Hazelrigg (1900-1990) at one of the Juneteenth picnics she used to organize every year, near what is now Hazelrigg Park north of downtown Amarillo. This photo was originally published in the Amarillo Globe-News on June 17, 1977.

Mrs. Hazelrigg was a revered leader in Amarillo's Black community. After a long career as a city janitor and domestic housekeeper, she saw a need among local youth and began hosting neighborhood Christmas parties, Easter egg hunts, and Juneteenth picnics. Eventually these events served hundreds of children. Mrs. Hazelrigg was named Amarillo's Woman of the Year in 1982.
