As the school year winds down, everyone is tired…educators and students alike. It can be tempting to loosen routines, lower expectations, and simply “ride out” the final weeks.
But for students with challenging behaviors, the end of the year can actually be one of the hardest times.
While adults see summer approaching, many students are also carrying uncertainty about what comes next:
• Will there be enough food at home?
• Will they feel safe?
• Who will care for them over the summer?
• What will next year look like?
• Will they have a teacher they can trust?
• Will they be at a new campus with unfamiliar faces and expectations?
When students feel uncertain, behaviors often communicate what words cannot.
This is why structure, predictability, consistency, and connection matter even more in these final weeks. Routines help reduce anxiety. Clear expectations create safety. Calm, connected adults help students feel regulated when their world feels uncertain.
The finish line is close—but these last days still matter deeply for the students who need us most.
